I received some lovely cards for my birthday yesterday, missed my handmade one from Dutch (we shared the same date). It's nice to re-read them and they look lovely on the mantlepiece etc 12 this year and messages on fb but like Scozz the internet messages can't be kept in the same way.

Stella, my son was taught at an early age that the words were more important than the picture for cards and as always he found me a lovely card, with words that brought me to tears, bless him. Having a printed card from Moonpig without the sender's own handwriting seems so impersonal to me.
(Btw haven't forgotten your VE day recording, must remind o.h.)

“My task, which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel--it is, before all, to make you see.”

I love receiving cards and giving cards not so much letters because I have always disliked writing letters myself but the joy of going into a card shop and picking a nice card for someone close to you or hearing the one drop on the mat for you

There have been legendary writers of love letters too – like Napoleon, whose early passions for his new bride Josephine were mostly confined to print because the Little General was whisked off to war just days after their marriage, when he was ordered to leave and command the French army near Italy.

Indeed the problem here was that Josephine rarely wrote back and he began to hear rumours that she was being unfaithful to him. Perhaps she was texting him and he was just out of coverage in the trenches or on the field of battle.

As it turned out, Napoleon’s letters became more intimate and loving, but quickly turned sour when it was confirmed that she was having an affair – giving historians more of an insight into Monsieur Bonaparte than they might otherwise have hoped for.

I enjoy sending and receiving birthday and Christmas cards,

my son sent me a card designed on "Moonpig" on his PC a few years ago, and i was ever so disappointed.. so since then he goes to the card shop and hand picks a card with a lovely verse in it and signs it himself.... much more personal i think.

We were very lucky when we had our two big occasions recently, to have in excess of sixty cards.

They were all beautiful and I have kept them all.

I was very disappointed though, not to have a birthday card from my best friend, she always makes her own and we had a lovely anniversary one. I thought, maybe, she had made one and forgotten the other.

Two days ago I was sorting out " stuff" including a bottle of champagne in a bag we had been given that had somehow been stuck in the spare room. There in the bag, along with a couple of others, was the most lovely hand made birthday card from my friend.

I was just so glad I hadn't said anything to her about the lack of card !!!

It is now on show, a couple of months late, but hey !!!

I write a letter to an Aunt every week. Usually 4 or 5 A4 pages as she is a widow and loves to hear all my news. Shes does'nt have a computer or do texts. It brightens up her day when the postman comes. By the same token, she writes back to me with all her news etc and i enjoy reading her letters immensely.

She also nearly always includes some story from the past or historical event to do with her childhood and so for that reason, I keep everyone of her letters. Many contain family birthdates etc and names of ancestors so helpful in my research.

I also send cards to people regularly especially if they are not well or just need cheering up.

I love getting letters via the post and would rather have cards than presents. Luckily belonging to the birthday card group on here (hand made cards) I can be sure of getting quite a few through the letter box, i also get about a regular 8/9 from friends and family.

I still have 5/6 people who regularly write letters.. Love to hear their news.

It was my birthday last month.

I got two cards, one from DH and one from friends interstate, which was posted.

I got LOADS of emails, and ecards (and 'phone calls). Nice, but the emails don't go into my special card box (which contains at least 40 years of cards).

Hello to you all

Thank you very much for your replies.

Dear Jean............I like sending cards as well and thank you for your lovely wishes.

Dear Dermot............very thoughtful reply. I treasure some of the letters I have from when I was a young girl, growing up.

Dear Ann........I don't official mail, either!

Dear Purple........I used to have a couple of pen friends. I often type a small letter and then send it, to those who I know don't use e-mail.

Take gentle care
With best wishes

I used to write to several penpals and friends across the world, now snail mail doesn't happen very often, in either direction. It's a shame but the internet is better than losing touch altogether I suppose. Don't know where I found the time to write so many letters lol

For all of the advances in technology – and many of them are to be cherished – we still rely on the printed or written word as the first draft of history.

But this isn’t just about the past. Albert Einstein might have been correct when he predicted: "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots." :-D

Of course, the Net makes it all the more accessible but is that really the point? Even now and in a more personal context, wouldn’t you prefer a hand-written note or letter to a mere text or email? Aren’t words from a pen more interesting that those typed with one finger - as I do here right now? ;-)
