Tax Refunds

I got a tax refund a year or two ago. They sent me 3 letters. With the third one was a cheque.

I don't think they would send an email informing you of a tax refund.

HMRC do keep email addresses - I have had self assessment reminders from them in the past and I had one from them last week inviting me to apply for the married persons allowance.

However all the emails I have received are of a general nature, they never quote specifics, especially monetary amounts.

In normal circumstances any refund would be accounted for by adjusting your tax code, or refunded after you have submitted an annual tax return. Refunds don't just appear out of the blue from the tax fairy as if by magic.

A Scam with a capital 'S'

Thank you all for your replies. I was only wondering as I think I remember seeing a member on here who had followed the email through and I was a bit concerned that she had been 'had'.

Yes it is a SCAM.

As LaGooner says Tax office will only write. They do not keep Email addresses.

ignore it Phyll - it's a scam

I always ignore these emails as the Tax office only contacts you by letter.

I didn't follow it through Rollo as I though it was a fraudulent request. Seems I may be right from what I have read today

I got a demand from Inland Revenue for £ 1 404 which they reckoned I owed them. I somehow lost the letter so they sent another one.
They haven't received any money yet ...

best of luck

My gt grandfather, a merchant, said not to pay tax until you could see the whites of the tax inspector's eyes. Then take him for a brisk walk round the block while the second set of books were wheeled out.
His son, an army type, said the same thing but when the tax inspector's eyes were near enough shoot.
His son was in the Metropolitan police. Ahem.

The much touted refund is like all of George Osbourne's promises either vanishingly small or vanishing into the blue distance. Inland Revenue have form e.g. repayment of 1st world war bonds, ww2 tax repayments and so on. People should not be so credulous.

Has anyone on here who received an email regarding the above and who followed it through, received any money yet?
