HMRC do occasionally Email.

e.g.

Thank you for completing your Self Assessment tax return this year. Your personalised tax summary is now available online, showing how much tax and National Insurance you have paid, and how it is spent by the Government. Please log in to your Self Assessment online account on Gov.uk to see it. You will need your User ID and password to do so.

I have also elected to receive Self Assesment Email reminders so get one when they want a return from me.

However anything that mention detail that would be specific or personal to your return is likely to be a scam.

Just DO NOT open them.

I have just received one of these emails telling me I am entitled to a tax refund.

Anything less like British Civil Service language I have yet to see, but what amused me most was that, above the opened email, there is a white tab with the first bit of the heading on it.

It says "Tax Refund Con" :-D :-D :-D :-D
