Dear All

Very many thanks for all of your suggestions. Sorry for the tardy acknowledgement but computer problems had me offline until just a few minutes ago. I shall study all your responses and see what my next move will be.

Regards

Suan :-D :-D :-D

S ~ look in your "Sent Messages", you can tell by the envelope if the message has or hasn't been read.

I have loads of unopened messages in my Sent Messages :-(

I'm starting to think there are less than 100 active members.... the ones who use the boards. ;-)

So long as you have a number of data points, ideally > 6, it is fairly easy to unravel any of the trees held on GRU by using the search function. You need not contact anybody. Living relatives will also be returned. Works fine whether paid up member or not. It is a bit fiddly though.

If you are good at crosswords or jigsaws then you'll have no problem.

A few tree owners are aware of this and have modified their data accordingly but not many.

Yes always try but type your own message with a little background, no up to date personal data, but why you think it might connect to your tree.

Often a "can I see your tree" will be ignored.

Good luck with your research. :-D

It's always worth sending messages. You can check if they've been read by looking in your 'Sent' box. Unread ones still have an envelope icon next to them. This disappears when it's been accessed.

Even if someone has let their sub lapse, as long as they still use the same registered email address, they can access it.
Of course, there will always some accounts where the owner has died, become ill or lost interest.

Welcome to the boards.

There is no way of knowing if someone still uses the site and therefore if you are likely to get a reply from them.

As a guide if you look at my membership number(by hovering your mouse over my board name and looking at the grey strip that comes up at the bottom of the screen), I have been a member since November 2003. You can then compare it to your own and try to work out numbers in between.

Hi all, being very new to this I am trying to figure out if I am sending emails to people who no longer use this site and wonder if any of you could give me any guidance?
