Taste probably isn't the word. It doesn't have any but I know exactly what you mean.

I suppose it wasn't to your texture.

Much depends upon what you are making and how you make it.

Although I have not eaten meat for such a long time I do remember what it tastes like (and still miss liver) and I don't like the steak type products that Quorn make. They are too authentic and really feel like eating meat which I now find a bit nauseating.

The turkey style steaks that I bought had to be chopped up and made into a meat-loaf.

iv used quorn in cooking, and dont find its to my taste, but i do love veggie fingers lol

It's probably because I eat too much meat and not enough veg.

GP seems to have edited his Good Luck post. It was intended for SuffolkVera.
We all drop the ball on occasions. ;-)

Don't forget the squirt of tomato ketchup.

It really does make a difference.

I didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest!

I do cook vegetarian meals as there are plenty of tasty recipes around that we enjoy and if we have veggie visitors then we eat the same as them, but I've never used Quorn before. I thought if I could cook it with the same added flavourings as I'm putting with the meat mince, it would be easy for me and we would all look as though we were eating the same.

I'm going to try it out tomorrow so I will let you know how I get on with it.

When cooking on any scale for groups including vegetarians I have often done two curries - same spices and sauces but one with plenty of beans in - and learned to make plenty as the meat eaters often wanted to try the veggie one and came back for more. The add-ons and rice can mostly be very acceptable all round.

Sharron ..........

some people seem to think that it is fine to question what others eat, and to correct them

I admit, I am a meat eater, I love my meat especially lamb and pork.

I have cooked dinners where there was at least 1 vegetarian present ......... as I said that Shepherdess Pie was a god-send, and everyone likes it!

I eat what I like ................. and let everyone else eat what they like!

Is it usual to comment upon what people eat?

"The biggest problems we have about vegetarians..." :-0 "problem"? and who is "we"?

do you KNOW how many meat eaters continually ask "yes but what do you EAT?" as though vegetarians are from some strange planet or chant the mantra of "Get it ( meat) down you it will do you good/build you up "blah blah ad infinitum for decade after decade.

Eat what you want Bob, if you don't like quorn don't eat it, simple as that... I happen not to like coconut but if you do why would I question it? We all have different tastes we like or don't like...

The brand of soya mince I used to have ( and the reason I haven't seen it lately is that it is apparently now part of the LM brand) does not have egg in it, it does however have garlic powder, one person I know is allergic to garlic, which comes in many prepared foods, gravy etc, she has been caught out because it is always way down the list of ingredients and if a recipe changes ( "new and improved") it may not be noticed.

Always read the packet ;-) of course on real meat it doesn't always include the ingredients.... antibiotics for instance..... you pays your money and you takes your choice.

I think one of the biggest problems we have about Vegetarians is that they don't like being questioned about the food they eat by people like me.
I suggest you google for the definition of the word I highlighted and you will see what I mean.

SuffolkVera asked for advice

Maybe advice would best come from a vegetarian who can 'relate' to what vegetarian food is?

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 10 Aug 2015 20:40

SuffolkVera asked for advice on Quorn Mince and I gave a personal opinion and thought it tasted like cardboard. I read the cooking instructions on the packet today and you have to add your herbs and sauces like you would with real meat. I did this a very long time ago and found the stuff disgusting - a personal opinion but not everyone's.

If you eat a gingerbread man is that cannibalism?

We all eat what we want to eat, that's OK

I never saw a cow/pig or anything else of such, look like a sausage or burger until it was slaughtered and processed

Maybe they were 'shaped' into such forms?

I wonder if we can 'shape' non meat products into the same shape?

Since when did a sausage/burger shape belong exclusively to an animal!

I use half Quorn and half meat in all mince recipes. Useless for vegetarians but brilliant for slimmers.

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 10 Aug 2015 20:14

Not really.

I found it a little amusing when I googled the highlighted word in my post and read it's definition.

I don't understand your point GP?

So some people may be allergic to.............lot's of foods

Are vegetarians more at risk?
