Lifted the loft hatch lately? That's where bro-in-law used to hide his dosh until we fell about laughing at the thought of him clambering up to retrieve it if there was a fire. Dark humour!

He had better not have one!

Had a brainwave - borrow £20 of OH.

Sharron

Sharron Report 12 Aug 2015 00:02

And how, exactly, am I supposed to do that?

The 20ps was stretching it a bit.

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 12 Aug 2015 00:01

Think big, Sharron, and be greedy. Start a pile of £20 notes.

Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea. I wonder if my OH will do the same.

I started a little stash of empty jars and a few bottles for preserving and kept it outside the back door. There were just a few selected ones.

Of course it wasn't long before there were Marmite jars, beer bottles and any other bottle OH emptied there as well.

Now, I wonder if I started a little pile of, say, 2ps or 20ps?

I feel in good company here!
Can't bear the thought of ever running out of loo rolls, washing up liquid, toothpaste etc, as it was a frequent occurrence when I was a child. Still remember having to use salt if we ran out of toothpaste, squares of newspaper (we all know what that was for!) and washing up liquid for shampoo, though I don't ever remember that being in plentiful supply.

I write the shopping list, and OH does the shopping ....... but he also watches out for any staples that are on non-advertised specials

We always have a stock of staples bought on special offer .....

.... so we have about 5 multi-roll packs (9 rolls per pack) of toilet paper, multi-packs of paper towels, about 10 boxes of Royale paper hankies, several bottles of washing up liquid, as well as dish washer liquid, several bottles each of 3 different types of Sunlight laundry detergent, fabric softener and bleach.

Plus boxes of cereal, tins of soup, instant coffee, tea, home-made jams and jellies, nad usually at least 1 extra bottle of the sauces we use .......... Lea and Perrins, HP, Heinz Ketchup, etc etc

We also have several boxes of new jam jars ready for this year's jam making, as well as boxes of clean jars to be re-used.

it's a good job we have a basement :-D

I don't have a problem with my bulk purchases of loo rolls, washing up liquid, washing powder and gel, washing conditioner, soap, etc.

It's the food stuffs which have been bought as a saver and go over date that give the terrible conscience. I'm doing it no longer…

Same applies with the freezer..

I never do the food shopping......my very organised husband loves it, so off he goes happily :-)

Oh, there are six bottles of Alberto Balsam in the bathroom cupboard because they will do for him and I saw them on offer at Home Bargains. I use Vosene which I buy when it is on offer if I can but only have the one bottle at the moment.

Several tubes of toothpaste and I think there are six packets of tea in the cupboard.

On page 5........The shampoo & conditioner I like is half price........... guess where I'm going tomorrow. Should I get 6 or 12?

We don't use much jam but I had to keep making it to accommodate Fred's foraging trips so I have a cupboard full of jams and jellies.

Then there is the booze. We hardly ever drink any alcohol but are full of bad intentions. There is sloe gin, elderflower liqueur, raspberry and blackberry liqueur in the cupboard that I have made and several other bottles of beer, cider and spirits that sit quietly from year to year. We take one bottle each of beer and cider to the village lunch every month and that is about the sum of our drinking.

OH once bought two crates of bitter on a ferry because they were on offer. They sat in the kitchen for years until I threw them away!

I used chick crumbs in the cat's dirt box and, on one occasion when we went to the mill, there were four out of date bags at half price (they are a food stuff) and they went mouldy!

I used to be terrible about buying things I'd already got plenty of, especially tinned goods. Now that OH is retired and shops with me, things have improved. He's much more on the ball about remembering what is already lurking in the pantry.

:-D :-D

For me, one of the best things about hubby retiring 3 years ago, was throwing out his work shirts. I hadn't replaced any for the last couple of years that he worked so they were all pretty much worn out and I ceremonially dumped them all in the bin. He very rarely wears a shirt these days.

We do a Costco trip every few weeks and stock up on things.
Our garage is full of toilet rolls, kitchen rolls and other household items.

SHIRTS!
OH wears suits, a shirt and tie every day for work
There are roughly 20 ironed shirts in his wardrobe, of which he needs 5 per week.

His mum always bought him new ones for every Birthday and Christmas.
After she died, his sister kept it up!

OH had a birthday last week, and she bought him 4 new, white shirts.
He added them to his supply of unopened ones..... where there is at least another 20!
