I still find it odd to think that Cilla is no longer around. I grew up in Liverpool as a teenager and got used to the girl from 'Scotty Road' appearing on our screens and becoming a household name.

I was a Cliff fan at the time but my interest has waned over the years, and when I heard he was going to sing at the funeral I admit to 'cringing' somewhat because of his age. However, having watched the link right through, I have to say I thought he was really good - it's difficult enough to read at the funeral of a good friend, but to sing such an emotive song .........gulp. Professionalism at its best I think.

Don't like Cliff much or his style of singing but there's no doubt he and Cilla have been friends for years.

The family could have had a quiet, private, family and friends only funeral but they chose not to because the people of Liverpool wanted to say goodbye to her.

If it had been family and friends only Cliff, Paul and Biggins would still have been there.

I heard it yesterday, but had no idea what it was......... because I was in the waiting room at the hospital; I could hear the TV, but wasn't sitting where I could see it.

Thankyou for posting the link.

I think Sir Harry sang with great emotion.

He wouldn't have been there if Cilla's family hadn't asked.

I agree with Kuros.

Paul O-Grady was a really genuine friend, bless his heart <3

Bob was it not personal and private if her friends were there? People who are in show business can have genuine friends also in showbiz surely. None of the 'stars' who I saw interviewed were doing the 'look at me I'm at a showbiz funeral' thing, many of them had known her for decades, none of them seemed less than genuine in their emotions.

I've just listened to Cliff Richard on Youtube and I thought he sang the song with deep feelings - a great send off to one of his best friends.

Funerals and grief should be private and personal affairs. Someone less charitable than myself may question the motives of some of the mourners. Not me of course.

I have an opinion on Cliff singing at any time but it would bring out the RRer if I put it on here.

I read that Cliff sang at Cilla's funeral and thanks to you, Rose, I have been able to view it. Many thanks for posting the link.
As a good friend of Cilla, I think Cliff did very well indeed to sing where he was and in the circumstances.
He still has a very powerful voice.
I am sure Cilla's family gave their approval for Cliff to sing.
Cliff has always been a genuine Ambassador for Great Britain ... and my, doesn't he look 'fab' - his looks and his size - for a fella who will soon be 75!
Way to go, Cliff!
Nowadays I am not a particular fan (I bought all his early singles and LPs) of Cliff's to sing his praises (I have an awful voice!), although my late Margaret was (and also a fan of Elvis.)

Paul and Ringo likely did not attend because of prior commitment(s) ... and there is the security aspect to be considered, too.
If they had attended, I think the focus of the day would have put the attention much on them.
Overall, I think it was perhaps for the better they were not there.
Paul sent flowers.

Joan, please consider viewing the link of Cliff's singing. Perhaps you will enjoy it second time around.

Joeva, I am sorry to learn you have lost your daughter.
Your son sounds like he was a lovely brother to his dearly departed sister.
I would love to view the photos but I am not on F/B or similar sites.

Bob, I'm not sure this thread would get people really 'arguing' at all.
Folks express their opinion - as we can and as we should - without becoming nasty to another's point of view.
This is my fourpenneth for another year, anyway!

Have a nice weekend, everyone.
BTW, if you can't be good, be careful!
(If ya don't know this by now ... there's NO hope for ya!)

Rose thank you for that.

He had every right to sing at his friends funeral and did it well,
I fail to see why it should get us arguing :-S Love him hate him Cilla was his friend of many years standing and none here would argue his right to be there.

i think cliff was really wonderful loved Paul O'Grady the Liverpool humour came out I think Cilla would have loved it, even the Bishop joined in with the jokes. Very surprised Paul and Ringo did not attend

Mersey Report 20 Aug 2015 22:32

I thought it was truly lovely.....no matter who would have sang it....

It came from her friends heart and if it meant so much to her and her sons and family
...he sang it with grace and respect ........
