Susan-nz Report 4 Sep 2015 21:46

Being born in NZ to English parents who met here, I was always curious about 'where' I came from - or 'whom' I was descended from....

My Mum knew all her Uncles, Aunts and cousins names. My Dad had virtually no knowledge of his family bar the odd name.... He had left the UK in the early 50's and had not looked back.

Through my posts on Genes, a first cousin of my Dad and her family found me. :-).
My excitement was beyond belief. We have visited and established contact with more family than I knew I had. My Dad, his brother and the newly found cousin all got to meet up here in NZ in 2012 which was fabulous and timely. My Dad and his cousin have since passed away.

It would be amazing to meet more of the family from different branches that I know are out there but hey ho, I will settle for my new family with great happiness. :-).

I seem to have lost the drive to go searching at the moment. Hopefully I will get interested again. I doubt we have any connections to royalty ;-)....

Dear All

Hello

Hope you are okay.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you remember the joy of researching your ancestors and finding the elusive pieces of information?

Please read on:

Mr Roy Blackmore, 83, has traced more than 10,000 relatives and ancestors.

He has spent around 60 years and thousands of pounds tracing ancestors
He is the Queen's 22nd cousin, once removed, and related to Alfred the Great

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr Blackmore also found out he had ties with Alfred the Great and William the Conqueror after painstakingly tracing his relatives for more than 60 years. His family tree stretches back to the Cerdick family in AD 500

He said he was inspired to discover his family tree at the age of just 15, when he felt he wanted to learn more about his past after being orphaned aged seven.

His mother Ida died when he was five years old and his father Hubert died two years later from wounds in the First World War.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He first became curious when, as a member of the Light Infantry in Taunton, he was asked to sort out some old pictures.

In one of the photos, he discovered his father and uncle and - to this day - he still has a copy of it.

He said: 'It was unbelievable to find that photo and it is something which meant a lot to me at the time.

'But it wasn't until the 1980s that I started to do something about finding out more about my family history.

'It's been a very interesting journey and for me one of the most shocking discoveries was finding out that I am a descendant of Alfred the Great.'

Over the last 30 years, he has dedicated his spare time to properly researching
his family tree.

When I read this story and about dear Mr Blackmore, it reminded me everything about the joy, certainly hard work and enthusiasm for family and history research.

Take gentle care
With very best wishes
