Please come and cull the (probably a) fox thats been trying to make a den under our shed. It has acres upon acres of farm and woodland within 200 yards, so why our smallish back garden?

Our local town had to arrange a cull a couple of years ago. The urban fox population exploded and had no fear of humans. They deffinately were bcoming a menace.

But they still haven' t proved whether the badgers give TB to cattle, or cattle give TB to badgers. From what I've seen of the badger culling it looks pretty amateurish - hence the cost!

I must admit I may be tempted to protest :-D :-D

SheilaSomerset

SheilaSomerset Report 7 Sep 2015 23:40

It is being done humanely - that's why it's costing so much. That, and the cost of policing it, because of so many protestors.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 7 Sep 2015 23:31

I Don't object if they are killed humanly for food
so hunt it eat its ok Maggie :-D

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 7 Sep 2015 23:27

Has no-one in 'authority' ever thought that the constant inter- breeding of cattle to get the 'perfect' animal may be leading to the increase of bovine TB?
Is it not more likely that the cattle are spreading it to the badgers?
If animals need culling, it should be done humanely by an experienced marksman.
I'm not averse to eating a bit of culled deer :-)
I know he/she was walking around one day - then they were dead, and knew nothing about it.
However, the way they are culling badgers is obscene, and chasing foxes for 'sport' beggars belief.

Amokavid I am sorry you have been upset
but you gave it a burial

and sent it over Rainbow bridge :-D :-

Barbra the Vet I spoke to said it can cost thousands to cull one Badger
I don't know how they work it out mind :-(

So vaccinations a great idea :-D :-D

Barbra Report 7 Sep 2015 23:03

Joy I have seen foxes on TV .walking about in towns .people have been sat. at tables & watching foxes after scraps outside café`s .if Badgers can get vaccinated .instead of being culled it would be a better solution surely .think people on here have more idea about sorting things out than many so called experts . :-D Night All

JoyBoroAngel Report 7 Sep 2015 22:39

Stella its still going on
a vet told me tonight a trap in Cornwall was destroyed by antis tonight
he was well pleased

SheilaWestWilts
there is an island off the coast of Scotland it has no Badgers
and the cows still caught TB

Barbra I have fed them scraps for years
When we had the Sheffield meet Uzzi and I went outside at 1am
and one walked right past us in the middle of the town
we where amazed

The badger culls near to this area and in Glos are hugely controversial, and are due for the next phase.

The reason for them is to try to halt the spread of bovine TB, which is devastating to local farmers' livestock.

Protestors say that culling badgers doesn't work. I would say how do you know until you do it?

It's only part of a potential solution and this year's operation will likely be as fraught with problems as last :-(

Foxes and badgers are way off being on the endangered list.

**Stella ~by~ Starlight**★..★..★ Report 7 Sep 2015 22:33

I think with the badgers it was the TB risk, but now i think they are fed or given some sort of vaccination so that is good...

Another 50 years and no doubt Foxes and Badgers will be protected species the way are being killed off at the moment.

i know sometimes it has to be done, but i hate it i really do... :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 7 Sep 2015 22:13

never nice, but sometimes it just has to be done if the animals are over-populating an area .............

excess animals HAVE to be moved elsewhere to avoid disease and other problems decimating the population.

If the animals cannot be moved, then culling may well become the only option

People have affected the normal behaviour and control of animal populations with all the natural checks and balances ............

so extreme moves such as culling have to take occur

Having said that, it might be possible to move the Badgers to other suitable sites.

Foxes are like the coyotes here .............. urban pests.

Sorry, Joy. But that is really what they have become as people have fed them human food instead of letting them hunt.

Consequently coyotes here in the city are killed because they have snatched small dogs and cats, or bitten a child ................. and I have heard that foxes are also considered culpable in the deaths of chickens and small pets in the UK.
