According to an article in today's paper, the tragic child who's body was washed up on the beach, had been living in Turkey with his family for almost all of his life, and his father even had a job there. A relative in Canada sent the money for them to pay a trafficker to smuggle them to Europe.

Why be so nasty to Bob,,there is no need.

Guinevere Report 9 Sep 2015 20:11

I asked bob what point he was making. How on earth is that nasty?

Joeva Report 9 Sep 2015 20:37

My comment was to question Bob about his opinion on the article he was quoting.

Nasty ? Must say I have seen a lot worse comments on here on this subject.

The family had moved continuously due to clashes. He was captured and tortured. They moved to Turkey 3 years ago, due to these clashes which had taken the lives of 11family members. They then wanted to get out. They wanted a better life for their children.

They had their refugee application to move to Canada (where his sister has lived for over 20 years) refused, so the only way out was through the 'back door'.
Of course, now he has no reason to go there, the Canadian PM has offered him citizenship.

This is all in the Huffington Post, under 'News' page 5.

I wasn't making a point at all, merely suggesting that not all of these people are fleeing for their lives. For the record, I am not anti immigrant, and feel that we should take genuine refugees. I am not taking your comments as a personal attack on me, feel free to disagree with me as much as you like. I am quite a nice bloke really.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 9 Sep 2015 21:15

A question is hardly a personal attack, so it's not surprising that you don't think it is, bob.

Syrians are refugees not migrants or immigrants.

I didn't say that you were making a personal attack on me Guinevere, someone else did.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 9 Sep 2015 21:19

Exactly, and you said you weren't taking it personally and I agreed with you.

Bob, this was discussed on the RR thread recently, and the real story was told, as explained by Maggie.

I think we should be more charitable to these people even tho there are probably some who have the wrong reasons for travelling.

Their refugee application to move to Canada was NOT refused as it wasn't applied for in the first place.

They were refused in June. I'd love to post the link, but my PC is unwell, and I haven't got a hang of my tablet yet. But it's in the Huffington Post - not owned by Murdoch!

Edit:I see the Canadian government reckons it didn't receive a request for a refugee visa from Abdullah Kurdi. Well, they would, wouldn't they? His sister had been raising money for their air fare. Once the visa 'hadn't been received' or refused in June, they were desperate.

The boys are dead, their mother is dead. The father is staying in Syria to be near their graves. Can we not let them rest in peace?

Facts are facts and care should be taken to quote these things correctly.

Many thanks for posting the link Rose
