Maybe Cameron hasn't met enough Yorkshire people :-D

Slap my hands. Ouch.

It's the way the thread turns and who really cares about what Cameron says It's what he, and other MPs, think they can get away with we should be worried about.

While he is thinking about where people are from it means he's not thinking of anything worse that could get the country in trouble.

Blimey I have been reported at such a late time and for no intelligent reason

I mentioned the 'We' comment earlier

What was that about, who is 'We'

Think about it from a psychology view point

Freudian slip over a dinner table or a drink in the commons bar?

The conversation on this thread is a natural progression that would occur face to face. Topics constantly change during our meeting with a group of people who are friends. If one person were to be pedantic, they would soon be on their own. That is a fact of life. As for some people making reference to others being nice to each other, well that is known as being civilised.

Joy forgets I am not a Norfolk Dumpling but a Geordie who gets her accent in full swing when I meet someone who can understand me. Hence her little joke.

P.S. Joy .

Give that lovely Stray a big hug from me xx

:-D :-D :-D

Well, I'm a Southerner and proud of it, but I've met some fantastic people on GR who are from up north and I'm proud of those friends too. They were all such great company and it was such a pleasure to *get on* with eachother in the way we did and hopefully will continue to do so, regardless of where we come from in the country <3

Gins,

Is your comment about 'We.....' In response to Errol's comment that was called for review? I don't know why he was reported and I am not sure what RR means - Response recalled?

Anyway, Lollybasher and Wend, I agree with your comments.

Good for you Wend, I was hoping you'd pop up. My offspring are all Southerners and I would resent anyone thinking they were not
friendly. You have to take people as you find them and I lived down Sarf for a good part of my life and they are as friendly as everyone else. I look forward to going back there now I have lost my lovely Norfolk husband.

:-) :-)

Hi Lolly - good to see you posting and I hope you are well. Anytime you are down my way, my door will be open and the kettle on, in case you pop by ;-) :-D

PS Just give me a couple of hours' warning, so I can tidy up and clean the loo :-D

as a very proud Lancashire lass, and an even prouder Canadian ............

I really don't understand this thread ......

......... at least I don't understand why Gins is upset at the turn it has taken, except that it gave her an opening to bash Cameron ....... and that of course would have meant it was a political thread and not a very interesting one on accents and which or who is better than another

eRRolSheep Report 11 Sep 2015 23:31

Still puzzled - i embrace people of all persuasions, backgrounds and opinions (believe you me I have had to in the past few years!) so obviously someone takes umbrage - is it petty minded? Possibly. Is it small minded? Probably. They are happy.

Oooerr, I've lived in the Northernmost part of the UK and the Southernmost (well, Cornwall), but never 'oop North! I've had to learn to speak different accents and dialects to survive. I have an 'Ampshire accent now.
I can honestly say, the people in one area were not 'worse' or 'better' than those in another. Different, yes, but that's all to the good, and half the fun! :-D

As a child the idea of 'belonging' anywhere was totally alien to me, but I enjoyed learning different 'ways'.

Methinks Cameron may have lost a few votes. It's okay for a Yorkshireman to say such a thing as a joke, but not a 'sooth moother' (as they say in Shetland.)

Would this thread have been started if the Leader of the Labour Party (when there is one), had made these remarks?

Just wondering. :-D

Gee

Gee Report 12 Sep 2015 08:41

Yes Cyns it would

Being Yorkshire doesn't come under the 'protected charichateristics' of the 2010 act but it's wrong to single out anyone

If he'd said the same thing about say, women/men/muslims/gays etc....it would have been taken more seriously, I'm sure

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 12 Sep 2015 09:30

Personally, I think it was just an attempt at humour......obviously not hilarious, but tongue in cheek humour, with a twist of wit. I don't see it as a slur on the good people of that wonderful county.

It's the sort of thing I could be tempted to say about some church folk in fact - and probably have - somewhere down the line :-D

If you re-read what you have put in your OP Gins......

“We just thought people in Yorkshire hated everyone else, we didn’t realise they hated each other so much.” D Cameron

He actually hasn't said that HE hates Yorkshire people whatsoever. Not at all. It needs to be kept in context.

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 12 Sep 2015 10:02

A voice of reason as always Cynthia - some people just see and hear what they want to and comments are taken out of context. :-)

Gee

Gee Report 12 Sep 2015 11:03

We can all read into what we want

I personally took it in very bad taste just as I took Gordon Brown's slur about Mrs Duffy in bad taste

My opinion of course, just as yours is yours

:-)
