Do you want to say which cemetery?

TBH when we go photographing gravestones for the local project or military deaths we don't really look at the edges :-(

I'm too busy trying not to fall over.

Esh St Michael & AA

Cousin took two photos so I'll try to place one on this site even though I still can't make it out.

Give me a little time to read how to do this.

Am I right?

I have to update my Tree and put Joseph on then attach the gravestone photo to his entry then it will be in my Keepsafe and you will be able to access it. OR Do I have to give you access to my Keepsafe somehow?

adding here because I want to know the answer :-)

JoyLouise just because I am easily confused, is it

C + H

or

C H

?

and I am no help with Keepsafe ...

supercrutch Report 14 Sep 2015 19:27

I haven't ever done it so afraid I can't help. Stick up a thread asking ;-)

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 14 Sep 2015 19:32

Right. I think I've got it.

I've put the photo into my Keepsafe and altered the access to 'shared with everyone'. The photo is attached to Joseph Robinson born c1660 and d 1711.

I'm sure you'll tell me if you can't get access to it.

JoyLouise

Can't see anything Mr M.

I know IHS is iota eta sigma so I was wondering if my unknown inscription could have some similar meaning.

Just to add......

The stonemason now puts his initials and a number at the bottom usually on the plinth if there is one.

Might be an idea to see if the churchyard has had the MI's transcribed. They could be on microfiche in a Records Office.

supercrutch Report 14 Sep 2015 20:25

oooer so the lettering runs in the opposite direction to the inscription :-(

MR_MAGOO

MR_MAGOO Report 14 Sep 2015 20:31

I have a feeling that it means.......here lies buried.

As in the first section in my link.

Could the "H" actually be a stylised "R"??

In which case AnnC's suggestion of Chi Rho could be correct

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 14 Sep 2015 20:39

So it reads C (+) denoting a cross H

Is that right?

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 14 Sep 2015 20:48

I think it is C + H.

Also been looking online and could it be Christos and Helios? It means Christ and .... Rising sun/sun?
