I see that a certain site which is dedicated to people obsessed with telling their 27,000 extremely close friends what they had for breakfast is introducing a "dislike" button.
A veritable green light for bullies, trolls and idiots.

Rambling Report 16 Sep 2015 18:09

Yes but bullies, trolls and idiots make comments anyway, so maybe if they can just click a 'dislike' they won't bother to try and grope around in their limited vocabulary for an insult? ;-)

I wouldn't mind one here, along with a 'like' button of course as often I would like to 'like' some particularly pithy remark someone makes here but can't think of anything sensible to add, and by the same token being able to mark my 'dislike' with a simple thumbs-down rather than a comment would save me having to sit on my hands till they get too numb to type
;-)

Rambling Rose - they do and that is the problem - it makes it a lot easier to pick on the kid at school (or wherever) who gets bullied.

In theory, it is quite easy to see who leaves a comment but an awful lot more difficult to see who has clicked the "like" or "dislike" button.

maybe it will be like GRU where the ultimate badge of honour is to get referred or disliked

could be interesting if applied to pmqs - do mps put their questions on facebook i've never looked ?

fwiw various social media sites are exploring the possibility of real time overlays for reality tv inc news and interviews. who could not resist like/dislike overlays in an interview with IDS or trip advisor rankings on the hungarian boarder...

lolololol Rollo - brilliant!

As with the RRer on here.

As I have said many times before - I do not think there is a single person reporting every post on here. I think it could be said by some that it is quite naive to think so. Maybe, just maybe, more than one person takes offence at certain posts and that is why they are reported. Hey but shoot me down for having such a weird idea.
I still think a "dislike" button will open the floodgates.

I didn't say I disagree with you
on the dislike button but, a few have
what looks like been picked on by the RRer/RRers.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Sep 2015 19:28

Sorry Emma I wasn't saying that - more agreeing with you and saying that a group of people could quite easily press the "dislike" button working together.

'Emma' Report 16 Sep 2015 19:31

I think FB should really think it out a bit more,
I think the majority of young ones would be
against it...I could be wrong.

Reading their rationale is quite amusing reading.

Also, it is an extended way of judging people's likes and dislikes of advertisements and companies etc so that that information can be gathered to form a picture and produce targeted advertising etc based on analytics.

Can't see the problem really. I use FB all the time & would welcome a dislike button. Nothing worse when you want to sympathise with a post rather than actually make a comment. Clicking like to an "I got burgled today" type of post to add support sounds so wrong so easier & more appropriate to click dislike.
Of course my FB is private & I'm amongst friends so wouldn't take offence.

I think teens would welcome it, although I bet there will be a dislike fest at first for a laugh.
:-)
ps Trolls etc who frequent the public groups etc wont care about the dislike button, they just write venom anyway, dislike is just too tame ;-)

Do teens still use FB? I thought it had been taken over by the baby boomers etc?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Sep 2015 20:09

I agree - teens find it very old hat which is why there appears to be a percentage of a certain age that think it is "cool". Teens have moved on to a myriad of other platforms (changing weekly). However, I still think it is dangerous and disliking something that is "bad" is sort of a double negative surely?

'Emma'

'Emma' Report 16 Sep 2015 20:19

Like you Mildred I am also private so it doesn't affect me.
It is just another button, but what the younger members
tell me it won't stop the trolls so agree with you there.

I think with the report button on this site GR should change
the way it's used.
If someone is going to report a thread they should have to go
through the poster first and ask them to remove but I suppose
that is a ridiculous idea after all they wouldn't be a mystery then.

This is a very small site in the great scheme of things and I shouldn't think has any bearing on the wider world of social media - both as a site and the people that use it
