Caldervale Report 28 Sep 2015 21:45

I am advised if I require assistance in seeking family history to make contact with Anthony Adolph at 12.00 am GMT on the 31st JULY ! ! ! which indicates I have a lengthy wait until 2016.
Hope you do not mind me drawing your attention to this humorous error.
Yours respectfully. Cyril Towell

What time is 12.00 am anyway?

Is that noon or midnight?

Not an error as such... Friday 31 st July was this year, not next, but AA appears not to have been around for a long while.

But anyone with a problem can rely on the skills of the volunteers for help...and collectively they have more years of experience than AA and cost nothing ;-)

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Sep 2015 22:17

it'll be even longer ..................

Anthony Adolph has not been associated with GR for at least 6 months, ie pre-dating that July 11 deadline :-D

GR staff never read the Boards ............. so may I suggest that you share the joke with them by using the email ...............

From the home page:

"Log in on Friday 31 of July at 12AM GMT +1 and click here to see if Anthony can help you."

31st July this year was a Friday. Next year 31st July will be a Sunday.

and, as I said earlier .........

......... GR severed connection with AA in about May or June this year.

so you're going to have wait until the 31st of never to contact him :-)

He was a paid consultant ................. and gave very limited advice but then seemed to offer to provide more help for quite high fees.

In one case some months ago, a member complained on the Board about how much she had paid and how little she had got for that amount ................ helper members found much more AND found that AA had made a bad error / assumption, so much of what she had paid for was wrong.

I think this contributed to the severing of association.

BUT ............ GR should remove his name from the Home Page. Although, I doubt that they have the staff to do it, they seem to be back to bare bones.

I assume that there are still "deliberations" going on as to the future of GR, as I was told back in May.

I sincerely hope Genes Reunited keeps on with Family History. Personally have made many contacts through the auspices of G.R. all in the name of Family History.
The meaning of 23.59 and 00.00 is quite clear to me , a working life time of signing on or off between any time from 00.00 to 23.59 , use of those times often referred to
as, "Continental Time" as opposed to Greenwich Mean Time, was core material .
23.59 regarded as "Night Turn", 00.01 regarded as a "Day Turn". Night rate payment existed between 10.00pm , 22.00, and 06.00 am , 06.00hrs. All in the past now. In response, to Sylvia in Canada, 29th, September 2015, G.R. informed me
how to contact Anthony Adolph 28th September 2015. Caldervale

In the early days, I enquired of A A if he could advise the best way to access Belgian records

He wanted a substantial fee up front, for that.......

We users of GR are very lucky to have the members who do all this work for us. I've never had to use AA - but I assume he is a professional who needs to earn a living, and if our kind members charged even the minimum wage for the time they spend doing searches for us they would be pretty expensive too!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Sep 2015 17:06

Elizabeth .......

you are quite correct that AA is a professional researcher who is contracted by GR to provide advice. If you remember, it was once a month, by pm on site ................. so it was possible for anyone else to read the question and the advice given.

What bothered many of us is that the advice he gave for free on GR was, to be blunt, poor ............... and in some cases downright wrong. He would then quote a fee for further information. I sometimes wondered if the advice received for the fee was better than his free advice ................ I hoped it was!

But, of course, his move over to FMP only follows the similar moves by Estelle and Phil, and who knows who else of GR staff, and could be seen as another nail in the coffin of GR as is.

I hope that GR continues, but could see it going back to what it was around 2005/6 ............ ie, a place to build your tree, community Boards where members helped members, but NO records of any sort. There was a subscription for use of the Boards .................. that is currently the Standard subscription.

Elizabeth2469049 Report 30 Sep 2015 18:11

I did dip in occasionally when first using GR and it did seem that the initial advice was just where to look - unlike our own GR treasures who do a lot of the looking for us! I only chipped in because people seemed to be a bit indignant that they might have had to play - it was the same when the cost of BMD certificates went up, no-one seemed to realise the cost of running an office!

Some years ago I was involved in a search on the old records board where last post said that we thought a certain lady was the mother but couldn't prove it.

Months later I got a message from the original poster to say that she'd paid a considerable amount of money to a pro who come back with exactly the same response as we had. The only difference was we'd answered within an hour or so and the pro had taken months.

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Sep 2015 20:41

Elizabeth ............

I think the problem expressed in the comments on here was because it was thought for a long while that AA was on GR staff, and it seemed "off" for him to be asking for more money when the implication was that he would provide the expert advice and help.

I guess he did provide "advice" by telling people where to go and search :-D
