one of my mates' mum died a couple of months back, and presumably all the necessary people were told, he has received a threatening letter pointed at his mother, that she "MAY" b e taken to court, at a cost of £1000, as there is no record of her taking out a new TV licence...............and YES they were told that she had died!

I had a big argument a couple of years ago with the company who provides the natural gas we use for heating and hot water .............

Them: Is Mr xxxx there?

Me: Who's calling?

Them: this is xxxxxx Gas company

Me: I'm sorry, he's not here. May I take a message for him?

Them: No. It's very important, and we can only talk to him

Me: Well, I'm his wife, and deal with all household bills

Them: Your name is not on our records

No, it wasn't .................. we took out that account back in 1972 when it wasn't generally common to have more than one name on an account, and OH happened to be the one who dealt with them.

Me: Well, I write all the cheques that pay your invoices

Them: But we have no record of that

I got madder and madder ................... and eventually, she very unwillingly gave me a phone number for him to call

He called

they wanted to tell him that the date of invoicing was going to change "as of next month"

it changed by 3 days

He did insist that my name be on their list as joint account holder

My brother´s GP practise rang him recently & left a message asking him to call them, which he did.
They refused to tell him what they wanted because they couldn´t be sure he was who he said he was. :-S :-S :-S :-S

The clothing catalogue I use would ring up to tell me about some offer they might have on and ask for my details.

Of course I gave them!

I suppose we are right to be careful but sometimes I think we have got paranoid over giving out information. But I still won't do it and I am not saying you are wrong LS.

It is horrible to always have to be so suspicious of everyone and everything.

The same thing happened once with us - our insurance co rang to chase up a renewal. In the end she suggested we called her on the number given on the renewal paperwork.

Apparently it is all down to data protection :-S so I've been told. The call is usually for me and even when I've been called to the phone they still expect me to confirm details.

A large motoring organisation was the worst - fine when I know the renewal is due but not for 'cold calling'. I once argued that it was no point giving me that last few digits of my car registration as I had entered them on a visitors sheet in a public access building a couple of days before and therefore it could have been collected by someone.

I usually tell them that I am following Data Protection rules by not giving them any!

The phone rang.......

Him: Hello, is that mrs X?

me: Yes

Him: It's John from (our insurance company)..... how are you?

me: Good, thankyou.

Him: Can you confirm that I have the correct Mrs X? Would you give me your address and date of birth please?

me: pardon?

Him: I need you to confirm who you are

me: but you called me. How do I know this isn't a scam?

Him: But I'm from XXXX

me: so you say

At this point, he got very flustered, and started quoting all the rules & regulations to me. Nope, I wouldn't give him ANY information. I asked HIM for information.

He eventually gave me my DH's date of birth!

Seriously, are these people thinking????????

:-P
