As for cyclists - how do you police that? Introduce number plates for bicycles?

Maybe horse riders should be included?

Anyway, back to motorists. Older motorists should have some sort of ability test.

I see no problem with someone in a 50 zone doing 30 - 50mph is not a target to reach, it's a guide

I tend to do 60 on the motorway - quite fast enough for me

Speed limits are not set as a maximum at which to travel, they are set as a safe speed at which to travel and a speed at which traffic is kept moving at its optimum speed to limit congestion.

People who choose to travel at lower speeds are actually causing not only congestion but also a great danger.

One of the things that the driving bodies will tell you is that it is a danger to yourself but more importantly to other road users to choose your own speed which is lower than the general flow.

Although a speed limit denotes the maximum speed you can travel at, it IS the speed at which most drivers will travel so deliberately driving at a lower speed obviously causes danger.

Someone doing 30 in a 50 zone is either arrogant or unfit to drive. Just as someone doing 50 in a 30 zone is also either arrogant or unfit to drive

If a vehicle or driver is incapable of at least achieving the current speed limit,
it/ they shouldn't be on that road..............this is mainly pointed at mopeds that are restricted on power and speed, and are taught to drive on (or near) the crown of the road...........

Driving too slow can be just as dangerous as driving too fast Ann. Someone doing 30 in a 50 zone causes great frustration to other drivers; it shouldn't do but it does.

How do you police anything!

what about driving whilst drunk Errol - you've not mentioned that - wonder why not -
drivers done for driving under the influence should never be allowed to drive again

and people using mobile phones whilst driving should have a fine of at least £500

they're bringing in no smoking in cars which hold children - how are they going to police that when they can't get the mobile phone users

by the way, I've been driving for 46 years, never had an accident and never had a parking fine, though I hold my hands up to a speeding ticket for which I attended a speed awareness course - at no time during that course was it said you were not allowed to drive below the limit

and I bet no one on here would admit to being caught drink driving, but I'm sure there is at least one on here

People have been prosecuted for driving too slowly, particularly on dual carriagways or motorways.

I'd like to know what the statistics are for death caused by driving more slowly than the speed limit against driving faster than the speed limit.

Yes, it can be irritating following a slow moving car but often it's through a built up area and once clear of that the driver accelerates. Maybe they have local knowledge of a possible hazard, they may be more knowledgeable than other drivers about a pot hole ready to knacker a tyre or a household of children who have been known to play to close to the road.

Re drink drivers, they should get automatic 5 year bans....my late brother lost his license for 12 months (about 30 years ago) and just hired a personal driver. Not exactly punishment was it?

My BIL still drives aged 87 but although keen to continue to drive to visit us has been discouraged from doing so as we feel the distance (160 miles) is too much now. However, there is no reason for him not to continue to drive whilst he is fit to do so. He is widowed and removing his transport would isolate him.

Re mobility scooters, anyone that has anything negative to say about those will incur my wrath.....like them or loathe them they are an absolute necessity for disabled people to live life!

I've been stopped and breathalysed twice( because they were entitled to do that,)

once they followed me( I guess they had to try it on)

the second time they were so close up my exhaust pipe, If I could've opened the hatchback, I'd have let them in!! I moved over thinking they wanted to come by and they did me for "putting my Wheels over the solid white line" at the kerbside of the road......

couldn't agree more regarding mobility scooters Sue - my lovely Mum had one and it changed her life as it does for so many disabled people - so the odd one is a bit gung ho, but don't have a go at all of them, the vast majority deserve our sympathy and our admiration

Well at that time it WAS a Renault 19, something of a Hot Hatch(with the 1725cc engine)....but mine only had the 1400cc,so not as racy as it may have looked,,,,

strange but each time, they addressed me by name (both times on my way home after a club night) and within earshot of my address, so they'd done the check could see that it was sort of going in the general direction of home, had a good idea it wasn't stolen.........one time they said why didn't you try to do a runner?
we've only got this 1100 diesel..........no way they've got radio stingers helicopters.....what's the chance of getting away like that?

anyway 100 yards from home...............no point!!

Lorries and those towing anything are limited to 50 mph on motorways so I don't have a problem with car drivers driving at less than 70mph as long as they stay on the inside lane.

I agree with Bob about the menace of the rolling roadblocks created by lorries, something ought to be done to stop that.

Personally I'd rather be sharing the road with a cautious driver than with a drunk. I think most people would.
