My printer & scanner

I had the same problem with my Canon Pixma wireless connection.

It would work fine for days and then without warning it would appear to be off-line, even though all the indications were that is was connected. Switching off and re-starting the printer, PC and router had no effect either - the only way I could get it to work was to re-install the drivers which did the trick for a while until the whole rigmarole repeated itself.

Same problem with two versions of Windows, 7 & 10 and two routers, Netgear and BT Hub 5.

After much browsing about for a solution, I eventually cured the problem by making three changes to the printers default LAN settings.

1. Disable IPv6
2. Disable Wireless LAN DRX
3. Allocate Static IP address

This line of printers have a tendency to sulk and go awol. Reinstalling the drivers from scratch inc printing the test page is one way to fix it.

The wifi depends on automatic acquisition of an ip address. Sometimers people have this facility disabled on their router and if this has been done the printer will appear to be offline until it is given an ip address.

Does it work when connected by USB ?

Hi Patricia I have this printer......

Do you have your Wireless Direct on ...... its found on the printer itself....

Just press the little House on the front of the printer

Worth a try

Just move the up and down arrows to change

It would not happen if there is a paper jam or it needs a cartridge replacement.

In the Windows 10 search box type "printers"and then select "Devices and Printers" from the results.
In this window, make sure there is a green tick next to your printer (if there isn't then right click on it and select "Set as default printer") and then (left) double click on the icon for your printer.
Another window will open and you should be able to (double) click on something like "See What's Printing".
In the new window that opens single click on the "Printer" menu (towards top left of pane) and if there is a tick next to "Use printer offline" then remove it by clicking on it.
Close all the windows by (single) clicking on the X in the top right corner of each one and see if your printer now works.

Maybe it is simply jammed or out of ink?

It has been working fine right up until yesterday, then suddenly today it is "off line""

I'm assuming that unless it is a brand new printer, Patricia must have already done this at some point.

It sould have come with an install disk anyway.

For it to work with wifi it first must be installed using USB.

1. remove/uninstall the drivers
2. reboot
3. WITH THE PRINT POWERED DOWN AND NOT CONNECTED reinstall the drivers
4. at some point you will be prompted to connect the printer; at this point power up the printer and connect it using USB
5. finish install process; with HP this usually includes printing a test page let this go ahead
6. it should now work

Connecting a usb device before the drivers installed often results in not mach happening.

When was it last operating correctly?

Try connecting using usb which will tell us whether it is a wireless problem.

If you have recently rebooted or reconfigured your router it could have assigned a different IP address so you will need to reconnect.

Check the power lead and see if you can connect via usb.
Are any lights showing on the printer?
What make is it and which version of Windows are you running?

Edit - including model number

I have run the troubleshooter and it found that the printer is turned off but I cannot find any way that I can turn it on. Its a wireless printer.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 6 Oct 2015 15:25

most common reasons: switched off/power line not connected, usb cable not connected, there is a trouble fixing option in windows control panel

My printer tells me it is "off line". Any ideas how to get it back "on line"?
