Thanks so much everyone. I'm not around at the weekend but can't wait to get stuck in when I'm back. Thanks again and I'll let you know how I get on. Won't it be lovely if there are photos of him. X

Well, I did know he lived and served from Southampton, as a Merchant Seaman, as had his dad, and granddad.
It was just a case of finding where the records were. He survived,so isn't on the CWCG. Southampton seemed a logical place to start.
If the majority of Merchant Seamen's records are held at Southampton, the archives can be e-mailed at this address: [email protected]

The links from the National Archives on the new thread do say that most records are held at Southampton. In your case, it may have been a happy coincidence.

I found details of my grandad's service - and his best mate's - at the research office (library in this case) in the town where he served - which happened to be Southampton. They also had photo's of them. If you live in the UK and are anywhere near the port he worked from, it may be worth investigating. They may also have an online service.

Thanks. I have found him on the CWGC but it doesn't tell me what ship/s he was on. I just wanted to find out where his ship went and where it was when he contracted Malaria and had to be brought back to England.
Thanks anyway.

What his name? What other details do you have eg yob, where he lived and/or where he was born? He might be listed on the CWGC. It's worth a try.

Hi Patricia, As it's WW2 it might be worth putting a post on military chat. Also a post on ' RootsChat' in the appropriate section might bring some positive results. Good luck with your research.

Hi, my uncle served in the Merchant Navy during WW11 and sadly died while in service. Does anyone know how I would find out what boat he was serving on.
Many thanks
