Just recently these dogs appear to be everywhere: adverts, documentaries etc.

I am very happy to see them as I had a min. long haired one for a number of years - pure chocolate colour - hence named Coco.

What drives me absolutely mad is the description of these gorgeous dogs as 'sausage dog'.
OOPS - silly me

Easier to spell, easier to pronounce.

A rose by any other name.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 15 Oct 2015 18:37

Here in Canada they're refered to as "Weiner Dogs". Don't know which is worse?

Denburybob

Denburybob Report 15 Oct 2015 19:13

Bred for hunting badgers, hence the name, dachs being German for badger.

Denburybob

Denburybob Report 15 Oct 2015 19:15

...and just to be pedantic, it is dachshund, without the "u".

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 15 Oct 2015 19:16

...that'll be without the 'o' Bob :-D :-D :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 15 Oct 2015 19:36

You can't even get pedantry right can you?

I told you to sit quietly and behave while the grown ups talk didn't I?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 15 Oct 2015 20:24

And I guess the hund without the 'o' would be German for hound.

Poor old Bob! Have some pity, Sharron. Mind you I remember my mum saying "Children should be seen and not heard". Wasn't that awful!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 15 Oct 2015 22:01

As a child, I had a knitted one of these.

I called him 'Dog' :-D :-D :-D

Kense

Kense Report 16 Oct 2015 08:46

To be pedantic, hund is German for dog, whereas in English hound is a specific type of dog, although it can be used more generally.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 16 Oct 2015 09:33

The pedant's revolt :-D

Because I had a knitted dachshund as a very young child, I became very confused with Santa's reindeer.
I misheard 'Dasher' as 'Dachshund' and envisaged all these reindeer, with a small dog in the middle :-S

I always think that these dogs need wheels.

What chance the next advert shows one on a skateboard (or has that already happened)?

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 16 Oct 2015 11:11

I love it maggie! Such a cute image, little legs going 19 to the dozen. :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 16 Oct 2015 11:18

Please, somebody tell me who Dennis appeared with. Was it Larry the Lamb?

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 16 Oct 2015 11:21

It's a bit 'wooden' :-D :-D :-D

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 16 Oct 2015 11:36

I only remember him on the radio, with Larry saying "Oh MMMr Mayor I ttthink DDDennis has fallen in the ssssausage machine!"

It's OK he hadn't :-D

Sharron

Sharron Report 16 Oct 2015 11:47

Good thing you told us that. I lost enough sleep last night trying to think who Dennis appeared with that I really didn't need to ose another worrying about that.

When at school one of my teachers brought her daschund to school with her every day. The dog used to trundle along I couldn't help laughing. Wouldn't be allowed today.
