one friend of mine has the theory that we have a weight change every 10 years after the age of about 50, usually an increase of about 10 lbs.

I used to pooh-pooh her as I was 10 years younger than she was.

But ............ it seems to be true :-(

Well it's not age. Going all the way back to the C18 all of my lineal grandfather's were tall and thin even when they got old. Two made it to 90. They were fit too. One knocked a man out in a bare fist fight at Romford Market when he was in his 70s and liked sea swimming .... in winter.

I don't think having a French wife who is a patissier helps much. She hides the scales on Mondays.

I am sure the 5-2 approach works for many. Getting through a day fasting is something I know plenty about from living in the Middle East (Ramadahn). Def. not for me.

I have reduced my cal to 1400/day (which is painful), play squash twice a week and go to a gym most days. The physio and doctor won't let me do much running right now and esp not jogging 'cos of my knee. I lie to them about squash. Sooner or later I will have to play my doctor...

All that effort just to lose one kilo a month .... my main motivation is to avoid unpleasant cancers of the aged. I gave up smoking for the same reason.

All the fat is around my middle and def not a style choice. I guess as ChrisinSussex says it is a plateau and eventually I'll get back to where I was a year ago. The weather is getting colder soon it will rain and hacking around the muddy New Forest has always been a good way to sweat some weight off.

Poor horse.

Horses can estimate a human's weight at a glance. Being overweight and seeing them shy away hoping not to be the chosen one is cringeworthy especially as the stable staff larf. They of course are all as thin as rakes from days spent either riding or moving muck. If you are overweight they will never ever give you a quick gg who can jump.

Rollo, you might like to take a look on YouTube at Doctor Michael Mosley's video. He explains the benefits of 5-2 alternative diet. It's not just another "faddy " diet, but a new way of eating and a new way of life. I have lost eighteen lbs since twenty-fourth of May this year. I have reached my target weight and I intend to continue with 5-2. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose..... Except some weight.

Crash diets don't work - they just send your body into 'panic' mode and tell it to hang on to all the nutrients it can.

Yes, age is a factor - I used to snigger at the term 'middle-aged spread' but my goodness, it's out there, splodging around like a malevolent blob, waiting to latch itself to your abs when you sleep at night...

Gentle cardio stuff maybe to get the metabolism going again, and reducing portion sizes - rather than cutting out favourites, just cut down.

My OH would sympathise with you Rollo.

He needed to lose nearly four stone :-0

Lost 16lbs quite easily with a healthy diet and walking but he is at a plateau and has been for nearly two months :-(

Nothing has changed diet/exercise wise so I think he needs to up the exercise and reduce the calorie intake a bit.

Disheartening though when he is trying so hard and hasn't had his favourites, choccy and beer, for soooooo long.

Hope you get over your plateau soon:-D

Rollo, this is what I read was a sure-fire way to lose weight.

Push with the arms away from the table :-D

Over last Christmas and the New Year I felt I was in fine shape so really enjoyed myself ... then was too busy for gym/squash in the new year and ended up putting on 10 kg / 22lb. I was then silly enough to play a long squash match, did my knee in, ended up crocked and put on some more weight. Eventually got my knee working again, playing squash with a knee brace, got back to the gym and crash diet. I lost 5 kg v quickly and since then nothing. My BMI is up to 27 and I feel as energetic as a slug on a lettuce leaf.

Why is it so hard to lose weight?
Any ideas ?
