Fish smell

I sometimes make a fish pie with just smoked haddock (and leeks). I put the fillet in a shallow dish and pour just boiled milk over it and leave for 10 mins. It flakes beautifully and the milk can be strained and used in the sauce. Doesn't smell too much! I find that pan-frying fresh salmon is the worst, thinking I will do them in the oven but the fillets are much nicer done in the pan....

I microwaved the fish Liz but I do that with Salmon all the time and it doesn't smell, it must have been the haddock. I will try your tip next time. Strangely the microwave itself doesn't smell.

Did you boil the fish first Ann?

When I had cats, I used to buy fish bits from the local fishmonger for them, but instead of boiling the fish I put it in a saucepan (with a tightly fitted lid) poured boiling water on the fish and put the lid on and left it to cool down. It cooked the fish without tbe smell going everywhere. I also do it if I want to make fishcakes.

Our favourite fish pie is made with smoked haddock. Really nice, but really stinky!

I do a similar thing to the lemon & water, but use vanilla essence instead.

If the microwave pongs a bit, I put about a teaspoon of vanilla in a cup (or more) of water and boil it in the micrwave for a few minutes, then wipe out the microwave with the cooled water.

Thanks, it was perfectly fresh but was a mix of cod, salmon and smoked haddock pieces. It was the haddock that smelled.

I have a Lampe Berger which burns scented oils and fills the whole house with the scent - brilliant

The lemon is a good idea .......

....... I had a little burn in my microwave years ago, and was left with the inside blackened and smelly.

I cleaned it as much as I could, and it still worked, but there was that horrid burnt smell.

Cooking up water with lemon juice in it cleared the smell away.

I used that microwave for another 4 or 5 years ....................

and it had originally been given to me at 3rd hand, so was at least 10-12 years old at that point :-D

Oh Ann this is why I am so glad we don't eat much fish in this house. All stinky smells seem to end up in our bedroom (above the kitchen).I have no answer to your problem.
Any fish I do cook tends to be Cod/Haddock in Crumb.I do love Smoked Haddock but that smell seems to linger for days :-S :-S
I hope you are pong free very soon :-D

One other thing ................. make sure that no fish bits are left either in the drain of the sink (from washing up, or in the garbage bags

have a lit candle near the stove while cooking

spray the house with air freshener ......... NOT one of the smelly ones that only perfumes the air, but a real good air freshener.

Ope the windows and get a good flow of fresh air through the house.

Remember ............... Fresh fish should have no smell to it

We use canned wild sockeye salmon to make our fish pies, and the smell will linger for a short time, but is usually gone within about an hour of cooking and eating.

We had fish pie (home made) last night and the house still smells of fish. Any good tips for getting rid of the smell?
