With bonfire night coming up please remember pets and Vets.
To a Veteran with PTSD a firework is an explosion and will bring back bad memories. To a pet they are loud scarey noises that will create bad memories ..

keep both safe.

I used to worry about fireworks and how they affected wild birds.

There is a pub in Shoreham with a big pond full of water fowl and they have a big firework display every year. The landlady consulted the RSPCA before holding the first one as she was worried for her birds.

It seems they do their squawking bit at the first firework, as they do with a clap of thunder, but, after that, they treat it as a thunder storm.

That´s birds, they didn´t fight in a war.

To be fair I used to worry about all animals also but I always reckoned that birds just got out the way. and dare I say they are birdbrained ;-)

Two of my cats were petrified of fireworks, these usually start around October and can go on until New Year. The Vet suggested Feliway plug in diffusers to help to keep them calm, fortunately they seemed to help them sleep through most of the noise, and when they were awake they seemed happy enough. My other cat Handsome Harry, was fascinated by the fireworks and would sit in the conservatory gazing up at the sky totally unfazed by the noise.

Sadly we are cat less now <3 <3 <3

Sometimes I wonder if Harry was more human than feline <3 <3 <3

One of mine cats detests them. She used to hide in the cupboard under the stairs, then under my bed.
I bought a new sofa last year, and she now hides under there!
I much prefer it, as I can drown the sound of the fireworks out by turning up the TV, and can talk to her :-)

I much prefer public firework displays.
Many more fireworks, you know when they're going to happen, and you can rehouse your pets/vets elsewhere!

It must be very hard for veterans when neighbours decide to set off £20 of rubbish fireworks in their back garden :-(

My mum used to be fine with the 'fizz' type of fireworks but used to go indoors when the big 'shell' type ones went off.
Years later she explained it was because they brought back memories of the war. She would have been 20 when the 2nd WW started and remained a civilian in N London living near an armourments factory. She worked in E London.

As she pointed out, it wasn't just bombs which killed, but also falling shrapnel from shells fired by the ack-ack guns.

Maggie I don´t see why you are those things because you object to fireworks and think they should be contained in proper displays. Personally I would ban them altogether.

Mind I had to have a chuckle last weekend as all the Halloween displays had their licenses pulled on Saturday morning because of the Gota Fria warning he he ha ha :-D :-D :-D If it wasn´t for the damage the Gota Fria causes then I would wish for another warning in 2 days time. !!! ;-)

I'd never head of the Gota Fria. Looks a bit dramatic!!
*memo* never go to Spain in October/November!!!

Nudge for Errol to read - and to consider others' and fireworks, while accusing me of being a woman/silly thing/over the top/ fascist!!

And when exactly, pray, did I actually say that?

Your comment on my wishing for a ban on 'random fireworks'

"Oh for heaven's sake.

Think about what you are saying"

THAT is the sort of patronising comment that implies someone should 'shut up' because they don't know what they're talking about, whereas the person who does the patronising apparently knows 'better'.
This can be taken a number of ways in the world of women being patronised, two being:
Don't fuss your brain, you're only a woman
Oh gosh girly, tone it down a bit that sounds a bit fascistic.

eRRolSheep Report 4 Nov 2015 15:48

For starters, I did not direct the comment at you by name nor did I direct it at women - it was posted in the context of the thread in general.
Secondly, translating what I said as "accusing me of being a woman/silly thing/over the top/ fascist!!" does strike me as somewhat bizarre to say the least.

If anyone is interested, Diwali (Festival of Light) is on 11 November this year. If you live in an area with a Sikh popluation, expect more fireworks!

maggiewinchester Report 4 Nov 2015 18:43

Errol, your previous comments had been in reply to mine, your comment was straight after I'd complained about more fireworks (and more tonight). Or were you saying Sylvia and Rocky shouldn't have mentioned the official displays where they live?

All I can say is, calm down dear.

Oh - and can one presume you wouldn't sign a petition against random fireworks - because it doesn't affect you?

Had there been a petition when I lived in the middle of nowhere, I would have signed, because I know the terror it can cause to veterans, pets and babies.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 5 Nov 2015 10:26

You can be as presumptuous as you like. It doesn't mean that you are necessarily correct.

Not many people have signed the petition though, have they?

Have a safe and happy Bonfire Night.

:)
