Wonder what Lee said. running to form then Lee I assume.

Rollo yes you have told us before that you know this area well. Just don't know why you didn't make it a general post but instead directed it at me.

According to my OH, yes Glos RFC are formidable, when they remember how to win. I may not follow rugby but have a husband who does and a son and grandson who were at at least two of the quarter finals and both semi finals and the final. So absorb a bit about it. Just aggravated that it messes up the TV schedules.

I can't remember precisely, but Lee said something concerning 'the arrogant Welsh' :-0

Edit: or ' arrogant Wales'

'Talk tidy' - as John Williams often said in his attempt to teach us all a bit of 'Wenglish'.

I have his tape. Very funny.

There are 1001 things to do in Glos. other than watch the TV not all counties in the UK are so lucky. I could easily have stretched the list to 100.

Thanks to MaggieW. it finally clicked with me that people want to watch soaps at fixed times and don't like it when the soaps are shunted off to some other time 'cos of live sport.

For years and years this has never occurred to me as the general idea of structuring my time around tv schedules is not a thing I'd consider. I just watch what's on when I have the time otherwise if it is something I really want to see then there is catchup. And if not avail on catch up... so be it.

Given the big audiences who watch soaps maybe the live sports such as Rugby world cup could go out on BBC2/3 ITV2 and so on ... so long as the transmission is in HD or 4G it wouldn't bother me any. If Whittingdale gets his way live sport will only be avalable with Murderocs and BT anyway which will satisfy soap fans - at a price.

I like some soaps - Fargo, Twin Peaks, Miami Vice, Corrie ( B&W ) - but even then keeping up is too much of a hassle. Is "Today in Parliament" a soap? If not why not ?

Not everyone has catch up on their TV, and not everyone likes watching TV programmes on a laptop/tablet etc.

Has 'Strictly Come Prancing' finished yet?

And to the housebound and lonely the soaps are something that gives their lives some structure. I do watch the soaps as the early evening ones are at a time I sit and relax and I do like the fact that they are on same time etc. I am not going to apologise for my choice of TV viewing either. each to his/her own. I have no problems with sport being on at all, my OH watches it on 'his' TV and enjoys it. what is annoying is the cancelling of TV programmes for the sport when there are other TV channels that it could be on.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 1 Nov 2015 13:39

.....or when sport is on both BBC1, BBC2 AND ITV :-(

Not everyone wants to watch re-runs of (old) 'current' comedy shows, repeat after repeat, or ancient Midsommer Murders or Rosemary & Thyme :-P

Maybe the various sporting bodies should consult the television companies so that they can "arrange" their games, matches and championships around Eastenders, Emmerdale Farm, Crossroads etc etc

Oh yes Erroll, that is a good idea, I'll contact them :-D :-D

If the TV terrestrial companies could show all major tournaments on their channels 2, 3 or whatever, we'd all be happy. Or would we? There'd probably be some people upset that their preferred series/programmes are given the push.

Although we don't follow the evening soaps, I do like a lunch time one and get quite miffed when Wimbledon takes precedence.

Regrettably the rugby cup business is not over yet for us in New Zealand. There will be the welcome home and parades in various cities and talking about the game all the time on TV news. In fact the news for the last month or so has consisted almost entirely of the RWC. At least there has been no other bad news, at least as far as I know. Perhaps there has been all sorts of murder and mahyem and the Govt sneaking in all sorts of bills and we have not been told about it as it was not as important as the rugby. Maybe in another month we will be back to 'normal'.

Ann in Glos at 13.20. Thank you I could not have put it better.+ yours and Maggies other posts.

Rollo
I have often appreciated your knowledge, however on this occasion I felt it was somewhat tactless and unkind to suggest sightseeing as an alternative to television, when you cannot know what circumstances may affect a persons ability to travel.
I do not structure my life around anything other than trying to live as long as possible to enjoy my family- especially a late arrival granddaughter. I have various interests to keep me going and since anything to do with travel/sightseeing is one of them, I will thank you for the Gloucestershire places you listed as I am an Armchair Traveller.

Clearly the British viewing public are not interested in watching sport on mainstream TV.

I have just checked the viewing figures for the w/e 18th October and out of a total of 180 top 30 programs (i.e the top 5 channels plus the 30 for all the others combined) sport appeared a mere handful of times..

The highest position was for one of the Rugby matches, with just 3.8 m viewers, the same number as for Paul O'Grady's Love of Dogs program.....!

AnninGlos

that is interesting IGP But I doubt those in charge will take any notice. Still we can always hope :-) :-)

Around 1.5 million people in the UK enjoyed / cowered behind the sofa watching a French language program about an invasion of the dead following the failure of a dam which drowned them all. None of the actors got a £ 20 M signing on fee.

Next Friday it is pitched against Match of the Day FA Cup and a sitcom "2.5 Men". Wonder how MOTD will do?

When I am King I will outlaw football and soaps.
Sorry, can't stand either.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 2 Nov 2015 18:44

Neither can I, Brian, but as they don't pollute the atmosphere, cause death or 'accidental' fires, scare war veterans and animals, I will put up with them, and defend people's rights to watch the soaps when they're due on, and delay the football matches - that aren't 'live' at 7pm anyway :-D :-D
