I find it a little hard to compare gun statistics with fireworks. surely these are two entirely different issues?

maggiewinchester Report 10 Nov 2015 19:44

I was using the gun as an example of an inanimate object being fine, but those in possession of it are at fault.
They both make a similar sound as well- and it's the sensation of being in a war zone when fireworks are continually going off, hour upon hour, night after night, that is distressing to people, babies, pets and wild animals

Guns, in themselves are harmless - so why are they so difficult to get hold of?
Perhaps it's because in the wrong hands, deaths and injuries occur.
Fireworks in themselves are harmless, but any moron over 18 can buy them - and, in the wrong hands, they can kill, maim and damage property.

That is why I used that analogy.

That is my opinion, I am entitled to it, it is not 'wrong'.
You may try to convince me otherwise, but I'm afraid you're banging your head against a brick wall - and the noise is irritating me

:-D

I have several guns, both shotgun and rifles. They are strictly controlled, kept in a locked safe, ammunition in a separate locked safe, and if I misuse any of them they will be confiscated without any compensation. But then, I am a responsible member of the community. Anyone want any rabbits?

maggiewinchester Report 10 Nov 2015 21:04

:-D Bob - yes, I like a bit of fresh, humanely shot meat - as opposed to 'slaughtered' meat :-D (like I enjoy an organised firework display as opposed to the neighbourhood feeling/sounding like a bl**dy warzone night after night!)
Got any venison?

it was announced on the radio here this morning that local Sikh temples have called for no fireworks or special lighting on Diwali this year .................. it's in reaction to a call fro Black Diwali from the Amritsar Golden Temple after protests over the alleged desecration of the holy book 'Guru Granth Sahib'.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 10 Nov 2015 23:33

The Call has been received in the UK as well - our local Gurdwara, probably the most magnificent in England states on their FB page

Just a reminder to the Sadh Sangat there will be no fireworks display at the Gurdwara tomorrow for Bandi Chor Divas (Diwali), however the programme for prayers still remains the same. The Sangat may light candles if they so wish for Bandi Chor Divas (Diwali) or in remembrance of those Shaheeds who have recently lost their lives.
(posted an hour ago)
.....

Various other Gurdwara around the country are doing the same.

Same here, Sylvia - no Diwali.

I have no problem with celebrations on a single day eg Fireworks/Guy Fawkes night, Diwali, New Year, Chinese New Year, it's the incessant letting off of fireworks in back gardens from Halloween until November 5th or the weekend after if it doesn't happen to fall on a weekend :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Nov 2015 23:45

we had fireworks until late at night on Hallowe'en, but I've heard nothing since then .................

mind you, the shops selling fireworks are only allowed to do it in Vancouver from October 25-31, and they have to shut up shop immediately.

People have to have a permit to buy and have fireworks in their possession between the same dates, and to set them off on October 31st only.

It seems to work!

maggiewinchester Report 10 Nov 2015 23:51

Too lax here, in my (apparently fascistic) opinion :-|
If I knew which nights I was living in a lateral warzone, I'd be happier :-)

I think it is a little bit of an exaggeration to say that you have been called a fascist.

I never mentioned names, or board, Errol

Denburybob Report 11 Nov 2015 19:48

No venison Maggie, sorry. I used to shoot a lot of Fallow deer, but as age has crept up on me I find it too much effort. In fact, it was dragging a fallow that I had shot to the edge of the field that caused my first heart attack. It was only a series of lucky co-incidences (the story is too long to recount here) that caused me to be found fairly quickly.

Unbelievable, had fireworks going off for the past 20 minutes.........

I really do want to find the people responsible and stick their rockets somewhere!

maggiewinchester Report 11 Nov 2015 21:10

Diwali tonight, Sue, so unlikely to be the same 'culprits' as those setting them off from 31 October - 8 November - you know, that week (plus) commonly known as Firework 'night'! :-|

Bob, very lucky indeed to be found, from what I know of deer stalkers - usually alone, and off the track.

The venison man wasn't at the market today :-(

supercrutch Report 11 Nov 2015 22:08

Diwali, ermmmm not in this valley lolol

It'll be some not so bright spark and they will be named outed on our village site by a dog owner who is going spare!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 11 Nov 2015 22:58

Good! I expect they thought they could get away with it, it being Diwali - but if there are no Sikhs, Jains or Hindus in your vicinity, it will be some dork....

Ethnic minorities (that sounds awful) are mainly Moslem around here.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 11 Nov 2015 23:29

Fireworks for Diwali has been cancelled for practising Sikhs. . Our nearest town has a large Sikh population, and quite a few families living closer. We'd normally see or hear their firework display. This year there is nothing.

Interestingly in Sainsbury's today they are still selling off their firework stock. A youngish Asian couple were pondering. Perhaps, like so many non- practising Christians celebrating Christmas, there could be non-practising Sikhs who haven't heard the message.

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 11 Nov 2015 23:33

Agreed, DeT,
I thought Diwali had been cancelled due to desecrations of the Holy Scripture.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 11 Nov 2015 23:44

Thats right. There were protests at Amritsa resulting in deaths and injuries.

We were hoping we'd get one particular check-out lady to discuss the implications with. She wasn't working today - probably at the Gurdwara. She's often said we'd be warmly welcomed if we chose to visit. One of these days.....
