Penny Lane came out just before the birth of my son - lovely memories on that one

Did anyone see any of the groups playing for skaters at the Liverpool Ice Rink on Saturdays in the 'olden, golden' years? The only ice rink I've ever been to where that has happened as elsewhere it was taped music.

I can remember going around to an aunt's and seeing this huge, flash American car parked in her street. Learned it belonged to one of the boys from a very famous group and he couldn't even drive then so it was parked outside his house.

Those were the days.

I enjoyed the Beatles through my two sons. Thoroughly enjoyed the programme and it takes a lot to get this old geriatric foot tapping.

Eleanor Rigby would have been my choice for number one.

Happy days

music brings back so many memories - I only play my CDs in the car - have quite a few with my husband singing on them - he was a life member of arguably the top Welsh Male Choir - Pendyrus - and they usually make me have a good old weep

I used to have 'Sgt Pepper' - given to me by an aunt, and I swopped it with my sister for something or other......
Never been much of a fan, personally.

My first singles (bought on the same day in 1972) were 'I Can See Clearly Now', by Johnny Nash and 'Starman', by David Bowie.
Released at different times, but both meant something to me.
I also like/liked Ska. Prince Buster in particular.

strangely I only have one of their LPs - Sgt Pepper and I also have the CD of it, but I shall now be on the lookout for some more - it certainly whetted my appetite - especially listening to "The long and winding road" - I'd like that played at my funeral ;-)

The first album I ever bought was "With the Beatles" (mono) on Parlophone Christmas 1963. The price was an outrageous 32/6 which would be about £ 30 today.

The trax on the album ( some covers of classic R&B numbers ) had the sort of raw edge that Epstein spotted in the first place. Lennon and McCartney spent the rest of their time fighting over smoothing things down or sharpening it back up again.

As Errol has pointed out anything once transferred to CD seems to be immediately smoothed over while vinyl retains that elusive "bite".

Musically they were far stronger when John had the upper hand. Paul was a better lyricist of the Brill Buidling NYC school - he might have made even more money working there.

I don't have a favorite song but always thought that "Get By With A Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker was the best performance of any Beatles song slightly edging "Get Back" live from the roof of the Apple Building.

My memory of Hey Jude was a school cruise in the Med. 1968 with a few guys playing guitar and I don''t know how many kids banging out the percussion and singing their hearts out. I had managed to smuggle my sax. on board which was a good move.

Yeah I did get to one of their shows back in '64. When the girls stopped screaming for a few seconds they were pretty good.

The arrangements are to say the least challenging on piano/guitar. Those who say the Beatles could not play their instruments talk rubbish. Geo. Harrison became one of the finest guitarists in the world and a close buddy of Eric Clapton.

The day Lennon died the world stopped spinning for a second.

I watched this Ann and must admit Hey Jude was my favourite. Probably as I was only 11when they become famous, and in my teens in there later recordings. There is no one record I do not like love them all xx

just been wallowing in absolute nostalgia - on ITV - the nation's favourite Beatles song as voted for by ITV viewers - wonderful programme - the favourite came out as "Hey Jude" - not my favourite, mine is "Penny Lane" which came out around No: 6 - but to listen to all those hits was magical - "The Long and winding road", I wanna hold your hand", "Love me do" "Eleanor Rigby" - magic - sheer magic
