GR won't say how many active members they have nor how many trees are actually in use. However easily available stats on net traffic to the GR sites suggest a rather silent forest.

The major business model problems for FH sites is how to integrate "trees" with modern and recent timelines when faced with competition for time and space from the likes of Facebook. Additionally they need to leverage the sites for better ad revenue.

Ancestry with its latest makeover has pushed the classic FH "tree" out of the game altogether (*) replacing it as main focus with an illustrated "time line". 16mm home movies largely passed by the UK but are common in the US with many bureau offering conversion to DVD.

Data privacy in the US is nothing like as much a sacred cow as in Europe which makes this a lot easier. Ay has managed to sell its current product to a lot of people who did not go for the classic dour research tools.

BrightSolid have quite a large team on doing something very similar with FMP. Quite what this will look like when released I have no idea.

As for GR .... while it has a positive revenue stream flying on auto pilot it will survive but don't expect any significant money crunching updates esp. considering the £ 20 M shelled out by DCTFH for the '39 Register. This is never going to pay off unless access restrictions are relaxed.

(*) Ancestry has moved the tree into the "Tools" menu for a given individual.

When anyone registers with GR, a tree is automatically created on this site using the details of the person who is registering.

Way back around 2003, my OH accessed the site simply to see how it worked and what was available.
Unbeknown to either of us, the registering process automatically started a GR tree . Of course, he was the only person on it.
Last year, he received an email from GR advising him that his details were hot matched with an individual on another member's tree.
Once we realised, we deleted the this single name tree.

I suspect that there are hundreds of trees on GR which have been created this way.

Any individual who has simply registered, will have no idea that their details can be found under "Search All Trees"

A tree will stay until the account is closed, or the author deletes it or deletes him/herself

IF he is no longer available the account stays live, even though it maybe lapsed...
and unopened messages will accumulate

hi unknown and welcome to the boards

GR trees will stay there until you remove them
the only thing you can do as you are living is to get in touch with the GR support team and ask them to remove you from his tree

i know they can and will do this as i have had my dad taken of another tree before

How long will a family tree stay up on GR ... I am trying to contact a relative who I have lost the contact with not through a fall out just as we have both moved several times ... has made a tree and put me in it ....I have messaged him and I keep checking but he has not opend his message ...
Ok he could be ignoring me lol
Or he could have made the tree a while ago and not being back on to see his massages...
I have only just started using GR and unsure how it all works ....
I just wonderd how long do the trees stay in GR ...
