Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 17 Nov 2015 15:17

We held the funeral yesterday for Michael . It was a very emotional day but he had a good send off with over 30 family and friends attending

The Father taking the funeral had been in to see Michael at home and in the hospice so he knew him and me. He said his lasting memory of M was when he came in on the Tuesday before he passed to give him the communion for the sick and he greeted Michael who smiled back at him. As father was saying one prayer Michael mouthed four words to join in .

Everyone said what a lovely service it was when they joined us later for a funeral reception .

The flowers were beautiful especially the family ones and I have been out shopping today and thanked the florist for them

As we were leaving the crematorium one of the funeral ushers came over and gave me a rose that he had thought to cut off the flowers from me that were on the coffin . I hadn't thought to do that so I wil be pressing it as a keepsake . It will go with the pressed wedding flowers of M,s buttonhole which is 58 years old .

It was a stressful time and I felt all wobbly when we came out but his family did him proud with their send off

Many of them have made a donation instead if flowers to the Hospice that he spent his last two days in . They are a charity with NHS support but have to pay their way too . I know Michael would approve .

Now need to get myself organised and not be isolated. I also know my Michael wouldn't want that . I do belong to a local branch of Kent Family History but haven't been able to attend the monthly meeting because didn't want to leave M alone in case he had a fall . Will be taking that up again .

Small steps now to find my way in the big wide world again

:-)

Thank you

You think you are only one going through the grief of losing a much loved hubby / family member

The grief is very raw and you think you can't cope or even imagine they have gone cos you didn't want that and they should have known that !!

Losing a loved one is sometimes how dare you cos I didn't give you authority to leave me !!

I know that my M didnt want to go but his brain and body dementia had its own agenda .

My last music for him at his funeral was this. And it was from my heart

It's ok to feel angry; that's one if the recognised stages of grief.
Give yourself time. Eventually you'll be able to drop his name into conversation without hurting inside <3

Shirley, I hope you will feel able to get out to different groups or to meet friends so you don't feel isolated but just take a day at a time, you have a lot of adjustments to make. You have been brave and strong and you need to treat yourself gently now.
I am pleased you had someone who knew you and Michael to lead the funeral service, it makes a more comforting atmosphere.

Thinking of you

You are in my thoughts Shirley. A difficult time for you, it is good that you have the support of family and friends.

I was pleased to hear that you were given a rose from the flowers you gave to show your love.

Something special to keep forever.

Take care of yourself and take it one day at a time.

My mother joined a couple of clubs after dad died and found a couple of old friends she'd lost touch with. All widowed they started going on holidays together and went to countries in Europe they wanted to see before they got too old and infirm. She had 12 years of this before 1 died and mum's knees became too bad.

The first few weeks she didn't do anything then told herself it wouldn't do and as you wrote 1 step to start it off. She had a wonderful time as she had also been restricted for a time with dad's illness. She made a new life for herself, she missed dad for the rest of her life but she had the strength to go on with life and enjoy herself.

Look after yourself Shirley.
