I have received my first Christmas card - today!!!
To be fair, I met with some old work colleagues, and was given an envelope, not to be opened until December 23rd :-D

Dermot - you've reminded me of my sister and Brother in law. Probably totally unrelated - but you've reminded me!
They bought a house (bothy), by auction, in Ireland in the 1980's.
It was basically 2 rooms, one containing a fireplace and a socket - to which, was attached a 'light up' 2 ft high crucifixion.
They lived in this place (with 2 young children) while they extended it, and kept the crucifixion, as it was their only source of light for quite a while.
Unfortunately, the electric company condemned the socket!!! :-D

They threw the crucifixion out - oh how I wish I had it to add to my collection of 'naff' religious icons :-(

I am expected to believe my mum when she declares that the first ever Christmas card came to Ireland from America. Lovely they were too she says with colourful paintings of the Crib & Holy Family; bright enough to cheer up the dullest of homes.

Lovely maybe but some recipients wouldn't give them a lot of welcome if a few dollar notes were not included inside. One fellow was known to slit open the envelope, shake it upside down & if a few dollars failed to appear, he wouldn't bother reading the card. It was only years later I realised the chap was dyslexic.

Looking forward to receiving meaningless & insincere messages of joy & good-will from many of my 'virtual' friends including a few who could not spare an hour now & again during the year to just sit with a sick housebound neighbour who has no 'family' worth the doubtful title.

Full of joy, aren’t I? Grrrrrrrrrr! Humbug! :-P
