Thanks for that Rollo, I like Family search, used it a lot over the years. Preferred the old format to the new one. but one has to go with progress I suppose.

GEDCOM is a primitive mess but all that there is for the moment - latest version is 5.5.1. Same as 5.5 but addes support for UTF8.

This may be of interest:

Microsoft have a (free) family tree program (good) which can import GEDCOM but exports XML. It is located in their developer / research section along with bayseian logic and Peedy the Parrot.

Thanks Kense, I think I will leave it there for now. D.

You can't add a GEDCOM to your tree.

Any GEDCOM you input will replace your existing tree.

Just to make sure I understand this Rollo. Does that last bit include adding someone else's gedcom to my tree?

If you export yr tree as a gedcom (text) file then nothing at all happens to yr tree on GR. You can import the ged file which GR will send you into other FH programs. Beware some do not like the way GR handles dates. The exported ged file will NOT contain any photos or graphics.

BUT

if you import a ged file INTO GR then everything in yr tree is vaporised and replaced by the contents of the import ged file.

Not sure on the wording of this process. It says that if I export my Gedcom all photo's etc will be lost. Does this mean that they will also disappear from my GR tree? :-(
