No one seems to have suggested you keep a master copy offline.

Many of us Family Tree Maker but Ancestry is now not going to sell them and will only support it for another year.

Take a look at some other programs.

If the list of hints includes “Ancestry Member Trees” & “This hint compiles information from X other Public Ancestry Member Trees.” (Where X is a number from 1 upwards) clicking that will bring up those trees.

As Hugh states, looking at the displayed details will indicate whether or not the matched name MIGHT be the same person as in your tree.

If you think that there is a match click that tree’s name OR the person’s name to load that tree.

If you then wish to contact the owner click the name (centre/top of screen) eg OwnerFredBloggs56, then click Contact FredBloggs56.

Two things come to mind:-
1. Just like on GR an Ancestry member may no longer be active.
2. Unlike GR, Ancestry does not show if your message is ever opened.

Finally: The hints only show any Public Trees. To find matches in any Private Trees you need to do a Search on All Records. But you will not see the tree (it's private) but you will get the owner's name.

Click on the green leaves for hints from other people's trees. Note the info may or may not relate to your person and may relate to a person / people with the same name. It is for you to review the info and work out if it makes sense.

Hugh.

the GED file will be sent to you by GR as an email attachment.
Open the email and save the attachment to somewhere convenient.
Then using Ancestry import it.
"Family Trees" "Upload a GEDCOM

as Inky says it is very easy.

Should be an attachment "Null family tree.ged"?

Click download.
If you have a choice of Open or Save, click Save (to wherever you like)
If you do not get the choice, click Open
If running under Windows, the file should open in Notepad. Do not worry it is just a list of data.(But do not play with it!!!) Then save it with any name that you like - such as MyTree151208.ged

Try Inky's instructions - its really very simple. All you're doing from Ancestry's point of view is unloading a *new* tree. Just give it a name different to the one already there.

When you've uploaded it and wish to view, from the home page just Click on Trees and select the one you want to work on.
The list on my account contains a total of 10. 4 of them are mine. The others are ones I've been invited to view.

1. Ancestry will allow you to create as many trees as you want with one account.

Two or more people can easily share an Ay account. Moreover trees can be shared to others with their own AY account. Such shares can be quite granular eg view / contribute / edit / living people (yes, no)

2. GED files exported from GR will NOT have any attached records

3. Due to the formatting of date fields with GR the result in AY can be unpredictable.

4. It is impossible to synchronize between any two FH packages.

- Download a ged file from this site. Top of the screen. Hover cursor over Family Tree. Click Export GEDCOM.
- Wait for the file to be sent to the email address.
- Save it to hard drive.
- Sign in to Ancestry.
- Hover cursor over Family Trees. Click Upload a GEDCOM. Click Browse to find the file on your hard drive. Fill in the other boxes as necessary.
