Can anyone help please?

O.h.'s father's car has been in the garage since his stroke. He will never drive it again but meantime the insurance expired as his wife didn't open the letter in early December about renewing it. She has never been involved in much paperwork in the house so unused to dealing with things -say no more !

O.h. and his sister say leave insurance lapsed but her husband and I think the car needs to be insured against fire or theft, and it should sorned too.

Surely there must be a way round this problem, it is a fairly new Fiesta so worth a bob or two.

What do people think?

The car needs to be insured - if not if it was knicked or burnt out there'd be no recompense. Yes it should be "sorned" as DVLA will get upset if no tax paid etc. Tyres should be inflated above the normal psi to avoid flat spots occurring. No doubt DVLA could proffer advice. My main thought is that the car should be sold asap as if left in a garage for a longish period it's condition will detoriate, battery will run down etc etc

Oh! if there is any road tax ,on it sorn it........

claim it back!!! or you'll lose it!!

as far as I know, there is NO compulsory insurance for laid up/ sorned/ off road vehicles

the GOVT tried to bring it in but it was vetoed!!

but for peace of mind...................????

Thanks folks, my o.h. won't listen and says to leave things as they are but I will talk to sister's husband and see if he can sort ins etc as suggested. My o.h. is a great one for sticking his head in the sand! I am surprised the old boy hasn't mentioned his car, he was driving the day before the stroke, thank heavens he got back safely and didn't collapse at the wheel.

You must SORN it or DVLA will come at you for the tax and eventually cancel the registration. Whatever you do leave the handbrake OFF or the drums will stick to the shoes - most Fiestas only have disks at the front. SORN cannot be on the street OR in a parking lot MUST be in a garage or garden with a physical barrier to the road.

Fiestas in good nick are really ez to sell why r you hanging on to it ?

Car Tax duty cannot be passed on to the seller anymore. It expires on sale and the buyer must retax it immediately.

Thanks Rollo, I don't know why my o.h. doesn't start using it, with the necessary paperwork in place, as it's really restrictive for me when he is visiting the hospital almost every day so I don't have use of a car. I did suggest it before Christmas, when he was at work then going to the hospital I was having to shop in the evenings etc

I will talk to the sister and b.i.l and get things sorted. I told her I was going to put up a thread, if others reinforce what I said, they are more likely to take heed. Funny lot lol!

Progress has been made, the car is to be sorned once it comes back from the garage where it had to go yesterday for a small repair, seems a certain person scraped it the other week. I have suggested sis gets the garage to pump up the tyres ready for storage. I have given her the website Kay advised, thanks Kay, and she will sort out the insurance then it will be another problem dealt with.

The house was measured and assessed today by the hospital to see if it's suitable for P. to go home at some point. I think if it happens his poor wife will have a breakdown as P.will get bored and crotchety and drive her crazy with his demands but we will have to wait and see.

Thanks for the advice re the car
