Clean up for the Queen?

According to stories on the internet, Brits aren't very happy with the idea!

One story........ http://www.buzzfeed.com/laurasilver/people-are-furious-about-being-asked-to-cleanforthequeen#.mlnq7VaE

We have a "Clean Up Australia" Day every year, thousands of people take part.

But......... we didn't go for years, because when we got there, the local MP turned up........ in a suit & shiny shoes........ just to say thankyou. We would have been more impressed if he turned up wearing overalls, wellies & rubber gloves, like everybody else.

It's not been widely publicised, in fact this is the first I've heard of it.

Can't see it working as any organised event would be bogged down in 'elf and safety issues. You do find local parish councils organising regular village litter picking in rural areas and a 'making a point' annual events along the shore. The results of the latter are often used to publicise the threat to sea wildlife.
Towns don't tend to have a feeling of communal responsibility.

There are regular turnouts here, to clean up the beaches & the parks........... after the summer holiday season.

The rest of the year, the beach is CLEAN!

The tourists come, party like mad & leave all their garbage behind. We should follow them home and dump our garbage in their gardens.

I hadn't heard about it either. The council here is good...but it's an uphill struggle for them, as per my thread on council cuts.

I have been impressed, albeit from a distance, with this group

I used to live there so it's nice to know the beautiful beaches are being looked after :-)

I'd be more in favour of fining people who drop litter a huge sum and enforcing the collection of it.

We drive through beautiful scenery here and see the roadsides littered with takeaway packaging, drink cans and nappies!

It was exactly the same in West Wales, stuff thrown from moving cars. Some culprits were tourists but much of this is down to locals who don't give a damn.

Hubby picks up anything which gets blown to our section of road (we are opposite trees and bushes (no houses). It doesn't take long and improves our view.

It's shameful and the people spoiling the countryside should be strung up (financially).

Rant over.

I heard about the clean up drive and rise in litter fines but I didn't realise it was anything to do with the Queen's 90th.

Never heard of Buzz News though. Thanks to that I now know Kim Kardashian is literally the funniest person alive. :-)

I am a semi-devoted part-time environmentalist. That's a posh title I have awarded myself because of my pithy attempts to keep my neighbourhood tidy & the fact that I am continually overlooked in the New Year's Honours list. In short, I pick up litter.

On my periodic rambles in the lovely winding narrow lanes of the East Devon countryside, I take along a bin-bag & tongs. I just pick up any rubbish I come across. I rarely return home after only 3 or 4 miles walk without a bag full of garbage.

It's no trouble to me really & it does give me a pleasant buzz to think I have done something positive for the general good at no cost at all to the Government's finances. The exercise itself is good for my own fitness too.

I often see petty criminals with their probation officer picking up litter along the towpath here as part of their community service. It's the only time the job gets done.

Would the Queen notice if nobody bothered? :-S

The Queen must think Britain smells of new paint ;-)

Tomorrow is the first 'recycling' collection in 2 weeks. Quite a few householders put their bins out last night unaware of the one day shift.
What with over-flowing bins and strong winds, there's litter everywhere. We've done our bit to collect around our road, but doubt if many will risk life and limb to clear the Main Road.

Ours was a 'recycling' collection today - I didn't put mine out - not much in it.
The bins still hadn't been collected by 2pm.
The lids were blown off the wheelie bins, and their contents strewn over the road.
