Gobbledegook only for anyone who has no knowledge of them. If you have one it can be opened with Notepad, or any other text reader. Be warned that they have more lines than you might expect. EG. a tree with 1,000 individuals may have roughly 6,000 - 9,000 lines.

A .ged is a text file with specific references - for birth, marriage, etc. All the things which you have input about a person and how you linked that person to others. And it can be uploaded into most if not all other Family History software. But there has never been an 'Industry Standard' (controlled by an independent body) so there are often glitches with uploads. These are generally minor, though glitches with dates can cause problems.

First few lines of a recent download - my prime tree is on this site. (xxxx private data)

I have a list of gedcom codes. Almost 500, but many do not apply within the current version that is generally in use. So anyone working with a very old software package may encounter problems when trying to upload a file.

NAME amongst others should be obvious. The ‘/’ separate forename(s) from surname.
SOUR Source.
RFN Record File Number (within a file).
FAMS Spouse within "family".
FAMC Child within "family".

Glad someone said it :-D

Some members have said it can be opened in a spreadsheet/excel, but whether it would be just as confusing?
Phyll, if you're thinking of downloading a gedcom, either download for free or buy a family tree programme.
Apparently the free version of Legacy is quite good.

What does a Gedcom look like when downloaded. Is it a tree or just line after line of people's names.
