But not the John Peel compilation please. :-S

Must now sit back and listen to it all before I head out.

you could change "empire" for "EU" - then it would be fine - God save the queen is such a dismal dirge

SuffolkVera Report 13 Jan 2016 16:28

If you want a more secular anthem, then neither Jerusalem nor Land of Hope and Glory would do. What about the first verse of I Vow To Thee My Country? Using just the first verse would keep it short and appropriate for all religions and none and it is a fairly stirring and well known tune.

On the other hand, ending the anthem with "the final sacrifice" might not be too uplifting :-D

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 13 Jan 2016 16:43

It has to be "Land of hope and glory" and played loud and in a patriotic manner.

Guinevere Report 13 Jan 2016 16:55

It can't be Land of Hope and Glory because of these words written at the time when we had an Empire and were painting the globe pink expanding as we went-

"wider still and wider, shall thy bounds be set ..." We aren't invading countries and taking over any more.

I still think God Save the Queen is best, it's traditional and we should keep old traditions about our royalty. :-)

...may He sedition hush
and like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush...

Yes, yes, I know, it never was included, just thought I'd throw it in as I'm in one those moods.

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 13 Jan 2016 20:16

As someone doesn't particular like the wording of "Land of hope and glory" I suggest looking at the words of the French National Anthem as they are very patriotic.

They are also very bloodthirsty.

I like 'The Star Spangled Banner' best ;-) but I guess that's not an option :-)

GeordiePride

GeordiePride Report 13 Jan 2016 22:21

I think if you check other national anthems you will find that the wording is mainly to protect the land they were born by any means so Land of hope and glory is no different in my opinion.

hmmm

I heard "Land of Hope & Glory" last week.......... when I won $50 on a slot machine!

I thought most music had a copyright??!!

I didn't think it was quite right, having that music on a slot machine!

UK copyrights extend to 70 years after the authors death.
J M Barrie bequeathed the rights of 'Peter Pan' (the play, not the book) to Great Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children when he died in 1937. An exception had to be made so it could continue to receive them.

"Land of hope and glory is no different in my opinion."

I don't know of any other national anthem that advocates extending the nation's boundaries into other countries.

Tabitha

Tabitha Report 14 Jan 2016 12:57

What don't we adopt/adapt this one as its the same tune but you can sing it with a bit more gusto

My country tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died!
Land of the Pilgrim's pride!
From every mountain side,
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love.
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture fills
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song.
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our father's God to, Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King!

Not for me, mentions God and that won't suit the religions who aren't allowed to say the name either.

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 14 Jan 2016 13:38

I think it's a good one, Tabitha.

People already know the tune - and it can be played at a quicker temp.

Not sure which religious people would not use the 'God' word? Is there a ban on using it or is it an individual choice?

be serious none of these things are true which is why Bill Bryson's nostalgia from Little Trimbling is so popular.

maybe this is closer to reality

"London Calling"

London calling to the faraway towns
Now war is declared, and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls
London calling, now don't look to us
Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain't got no swing
'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing

[Chorus 1:]
The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

London calling to the imitation zone
Forget it, brother, you can go it alone
London calling to the zombies of death
Quit holding out, and draw another breath
London calling, and I don't wanna shout
But while we were talking, I saw you nodding out
London calling, see we ain't got no high
Except for that one with the yellowy eyes

[Chorus 2: x2]
The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

Now get this

London calling, yes, I was there, too
An' you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
London calling at the top of the dial
After all this, won't you give me a smile?
London calling

Rollo, I was being courteous, rather than serious. If there is some sort of ban on using the 'God' word by some religionists or religions, I'd like to know about it as it's something I've never come across before.

Now I'll be courteous about your nuclear wipeout poem.

It can be shortened - boom! Too late for poems :-D
