Sad for him because if my memory is correct I think his Dad had already died (Navy?) and he was still a boy when his Mum died too. It was then when he went into Barnardo's.

I think I can recall him saying that it was a good thing that Barmnardo's existed. Let me know if my recall is wrong, Ann.
