I am confused as to why a couple who died same year and place, would have the same reference numbers. Anyone know why it could be ?

Are you sure they are different people? Might the same person be known by several names?
Depending on the period, you could also consider a trans-gender person who lived as and was known by 'other' gender identity.

As they are deceased, if you can post the details, we could have a look and come up with a different suggestion.

If you mean the same volume and page then there is no mystery as several people may share the same page.

For example John Smith who died in Boltion in Q1 1900 shares the same page number with these:

Deaths Mar 1900 (>99%)

Boothby George 11 Bolton 8c 247
Burke Ann 54 Bolton 8c 247
Burke Annie 43 Bolton 8c 247
Grundy Ellen 54 Bolton 8c 247
Lee George 72 Bolton 8c 247
Maguire Margaret 67 Bolton 8c 247
Mort George 0 Bolton 8c 247
Smith John 50 Bolton 8c 247
Tyson Alicia 38 Bolton 8c 247
Wright Thomas 64 Bolton 8c 247

No, sorry, I possibly didn't make myself clear. These were a married couple who it appears died the same year but when I went to order the death certificates I then realised they both had the same ordering vol number & page & quarter ! Does anyone else think this is odd ? Could it be that they died together ?

They could have died at the same time Penny, possibly an accident. If you post the details someone else can take a look

Penny, are you saying they died the same year but not the same date?
There's nothing odd about a couple dying at the same time, as Sylvia says they could have been involved in the same accident. It's also not unheard of for one partner to die, say in hospital and the other having been their carer for a long time to pass away a few days later. There must be lots of scenarios.
WW2 is another example.

Recently I've come across one in my own tree - they died within 4 days of each other. Another couple (American) states they died in an automobile accident.

The estates of the British couple both went to Probate which was granted on the same day. Their folio mumber were 4 digits apart.

If they had any money to leave, you could see if your couple was the same.

Make sure you tick the correct tab for the year range

Even if they died a few days apart they could still have the same page numbers as their deaths could have been registered at the same time.
