Quite so Rollo, only stations (edited, that I can receive)on FM seem to be clones of each others' regional offerings............most times .....rubbish

My OH is a traditionalist and likes to listen to long distance (LW MW ) radio in French and Spanish. She rates the entertainment value of BBC Radio 1,2,3 as poor to absymal with local radio well behind ...

Until November she was able to pick up RTL and other stuff quite well on her ancient Grundig and if you were lucky the car radio. RTL itself was also available on the 'net via laptop or smartphone. Then the radio packed up and I gave it to a radio geek to fix.

Quel horreur. OH v annoyed, sure that the radio could have been fixed French style with some wire and a persuasive hammer. So today gave her a replacement radio, a Grundig lookalike from Sainsbury.

Well the radio works fine BUT I discovered that RTL shut down LW/MW on new year's eve and now only broadcasts FM. Even worse France Inter is closing LW end 2016. It appears that on cost grounds LW/MW is disappearing from Europe. I suspect that the real reason is that the greedy mobile phone companies want the bandwidth.

I like real radios. Moreover they work without needing all the annoyances of a 'net streaming connection or hoovering up smartphone bandwidth.

Net radio can be blocked in a moment at the behest of any freedom loving organisation such as GCHQ, the Tory Party or Homeland Security. Even worse they can monitor all the subversives listening to unapproved radio. Take it from me RTL Gros tetes can be very subversive. Ask V.

We are waltzing into Sky/Fox/Daily Mail's fascist nirvana with narry a thought to what happen's next.
