Just read in the paper that there has been an explosion at Didcot Power station. So far 1 confirmed dead, 3 missing and 5 in hospital.

My thoughts go out to all the family's involved.

We saw this on the news just after 6. Such a shame that there are more fatalities.
We got the impression that they were preparing the redundant building for demolition.

The decommissioned Didcot A plant closed in 2013 and demolition work has been taking place.

Npower said it was working with its demolition contractors Coleman and Company to "establish the facts" of the "tragic events".

From Coleman & company website:

Methods of demolition include:
•Traditional
•High Reach
•Deconstruction
•Cut & Carve
•Explosive
•Dismantling

Did they get a premature explosion, I wonder or just a structural collapse by taking it apart in the wrong order?

Could it have been a build up of gas?

Coleman is one of the dominant demolition companies. It is liked by large concerns inc highway authorites because it has experience, all the specialised kit and above all it removes any comebacks from the client to Colemans.

Nevertheless it has form for this sort of thing (*) but not quite so dramatic.

Given the aged of the Didcot power station the standard of original construction may well not have been compliant with specs. and caught the contractors on the hop. For this reason it is usual to make sure all staff are well away from the structure before any demolition procedure is started.

Given that there may be as many as four fatalaties there will be an extensive investigation both by the govt. and for the coroner's court. This sad accident is also a reminder that work is not risk free for many people.
