Scotland's People.....

Free to search until 17th March........ 2 points to see more.

More? What does that mean?

I don't want to buy more points then find out the only person listed is the "Head of Household".

I've found both sets of grandparents...... but one surname has been incorrectly transcribed!

Valuation Rolls are property details. I don't think people are included because the valuation of a property doesn't change if it is sold.

I imagine the basic search will tell you if an address existed in any particular year, and the actual roll will give a detailed description of that property, as it was then.

I think they started in Victorian times and were the basis of local rates. I can remember when all house sale notices included the rateable value. The rate was then set by the local council and a bit of multiplication told you how much to pay for the year in question.

I already knew the address of my maternal grandparents, now I have the full address for the paternals!

Somewhere in the depths of a cupboard there's a photograph of my Mum, about 7 years old, standing at the front gate of the house with her mother. I know it was a very old house, it didn't have electricity in 1935!

The SP website gives some info but doesn't state fully what's listed..... you have to use points to find out.

According to the websites, the English/Welsh valuations are not published (they are part of the Inland Revenue setup - HMRC) whereas the Scottish ones are done by local councils and are available for public inspection.

You may have read this already, but it tells you more about what is in them.
