I don't take anything that hasn't been prescribed by my doctors.

I get all my prescriptions at the same chemist, they always check to make sure nothing clashes.

I've told my doctor that I will never take warfarin.... I believe that's what killed my mother <3

I had a heart attack about 10 years ago. At the time, my BP was normal, my cholesterol level was about 4.5 ... and I was well within the weight/height balance.

I take a huge amount of medication but it's all tailored to my illnesses and blood tests.

Always speak to your GP/specialist before adding any OTC medication please.

FTR aspirin is useful for sticky platelets which is why I was prescribed it. NB prescribed.

LS ............

I can't take aspirin with or without food.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 5 Mar 2016 23:39

I take 1/2 an aspirin every day in winter.... with meals, because it can upset some stomachs.

I don't take aspirin in summer. Doc agrees with me.

It's Autumn here, but I'm not taking aspirin yet, cos I'm having a procedure done in hospital on 21 March, and they recommend being off aspirin for a couple of weeks before.

If I have to take any more medications, I'll rattle when I walk.

When OH had his hip replacement operation he was the envy of the ward because his consultant put him on aspirin to prevent blood clots and all the other patients were on warfarin, which made them sick!!

He was told to carry on taking it until his 6-month check up, when the consultant said he could stop.

He is now on statins to prevent high cholesterol levels, although they have never been dangerously high. He has a fairly low-fat diet and we don't add salt to our food, but our GP is a great believer in preventative medicine.

Allan Report 5 Mar 2016 22:08

After a pulmonary embolism a few years ago I was put on warfarin for twelve months.

At the end of that period the Consultant prescribed low dose aspirin, which I have taken daily ever since.

The only reaction has been when I have to inject myself with Clexane (before flying) when I can end up with severe bruising at the site of the injection, usually the belly :-(

you should also remember that aspirin is thought to be a major cause of stomach ulcers ...................... I'm not allowed to take it for that reason.

The current theory here is similar to what Barry_ posted ...............if you realise you are having a heart attack, call 911 and chew 2 aspirin.

But that is a no no for me!

Like everythng else .............. this is not a medical site, no-one on here is a medical expert, although we all know how we should be managing our own health and health problem.

In other words ............ don't ask us ................ ask your doctor.

But I will re-iterate that aspirin and statins are two very different drugs that work different ways, so don't think that you can replace one with the other.

Bob. Just to clear things up - Aspirin will not stop a heart attack if an artery is totally blocked then even thinned blood cant get thro! The heart is pumping away but the blood cannot get thro so up goes blood pressure, blood is thus backing up and damages the heart. When I had my heart attack the ;paramedics who came to house fed me several aspirin to get blood really thin til I could be sorted out. I was lucky just needed one stent. Any one on "heart" drugs - statins, aspirin etc should also be on an appropriate diet ie low fat

A bowl of porriage is the cheapest and healthy way to help break down fattty deposits in the artries,,,,and of course keep off sat fats,,,,but once the damage is done anything that helps keep things from getting worse can only be good.

Daftoldbat there is, I understand a substitute for aspirin - why not talk to your chemist?

Ron2

Ron2 Report 5 Mar 2016 19:54

As Kay stated Aspirin is used to thin blood (it has nowt to do with chol'). Thinning the blood helps it to get thro arteries narrowed by deposits of chol' on artery walls. Usual dosage prescribed is one 75mg dispersible tab a day. I've been on one tab a day for years. Mate of mine - had 3 heart attacks and had to take 2 tabs per day but that not good enough so now on Warfarin. His own daft fault as he puts an enormous amount of salt on his food but cant get thro to him that salt thickens the blood. I carry emergency aspirin as can suffer angina attacks - this in addition to the nitro' spray which I also carry. I have tried statins to bring my chol levels down but, far too many side effects so stopped taking them even tho tried different ones. NB aspirin best taken after/with food NOT on an empty belly - due possibility of belly bleeds and should be totally dissolved in a little water. I'm currently eating Betavivo - crispy oat hearts in an effort to get my chol levels down but costing me around £24 a month! Hope this info of use

I am seriously allergic to aspirin, so hope I never need it. I carry an Epipen just in case I inadvertently take something containing it. Not a nice experience!

I have been on statins, aspirin, BP tablets, beta blockers, since my first heart attack in 2003. I have had two more since, and a quadruple bypass. These tablets don't seem to have done me much good I said. Well without them, one of these heart attacks might have killed you, said the cardiologist. Can't win, can you?

Kay????

Kay???? Report 5 Mar 2016 19:07

Asprin is used to thin the blood,,,,,,,and should be used only on medical advise and is usually prescribed to those who have or had heart related problems,,,,,,,,,,taking asprin over long periods of time can cause irritation to stomach linings and bleeding and also have effects on the kidneys,,,,,hence, regular blood tests, water tests.,asprin is the cheapest tablet on prescription and its not advisable to self medicate for any heart related conditions.

I was prescribed one statin, resulted in pain in joints. Reported to Doctor was put an a different statin resulted in headaches.

I never had either symptom before the statins.

I've been on statins for years - it lowers my high familial cholesterol to a safe level - I only have good effects from it - no side effects-- without statins my cholesterol is in double figures and I suffer chest pains similar to what I imagine a heart attack to feel like
