Hi all,

not been around in a bit but hoping some lovely person might give me advice!

My 11yo son is really interested in the family tree and I am going to encourage him hugely! He has Aspergers, is very bright, but finds school challenging. His teachers say he isn't doing to well at maths and isn't interested in much except history and science. Well this is the child who worked out his gt gt grandfathers age from DoB and DoD before I completed the sentence. Genealogy really is all round education.

I am wondering if anyone knows of any downloads for family groups that might be available for paper records but also any easy to navigate programmes?

I've got to say I'm really excited that he is interested. I'm considering home schooling and genealogy will give me geography, history, maths and English in one (yes, I know its not that simple! ;-)) But out of 6 children; the rest all adults; he is the only one interested!

Any help much appreciated! <3 :-D

Hi Theresa

Try googling for genealogy software..... many of them have a small one that's free to to try, most of them will hold up to 100 names.

I use RootsMagic, but there are many more. I tried lots of them, but found RM the easiest to navigate.

I'm sure there are paper "trees" also available on the internet.

Good Luck!

and/or a vast swathe of lining paper attached to the wall, with address labels or post-it notes to put on as and when you 'find' someone, to make it 'tactile'.

Hi Theresa, that is exciting for you that he is showing an interest. And, you are right it does tick so many boxes for education. I am sure that we would all be interested to know how you progress with him so please, if you can, keep us informed.
Do you have lots of photos to complete a large family history scrap book with information about the careers of ancestors etc. Maybe writing up the information in his own words would help with essay writing?

Good for you Theresa.
I have a 16 yet old grandson who has Aspergers. He lives in Australia and the schools there have really helped.
If they are interested in something it's all the way.so if you can keep his interest and get excited with him over his searches I'm sure he will be the one to carry on ...it's a great idea...wish I'd got some of mine interested!...
