Visiting Durham's World Heritage Site?

Info for anyone considering visiting Durham and its world-famous Cathedrel:

for those who had planned on climbing the tower (325 steps winding their way to the top), you will not be able to do the climb until next year as the tower is closed for repairs.

I have read that by way of compensation, tours of the bell chamber are planned while the tower is closed.

It is well worth a visit though, as it is a beautiful city whether or not you are able to climb the tower.

The Cathedral is beautiful.

I went to Durham for an interview and exam to get into the uni back in 1959, and had some free time one day.

Mum and Dad always visited the cathedral or major church every time we went to a new place ..... we went as "tourists". So it was almost second nature for me to find the Cathedral.

I didn't climb the tower though ...... I thought that I wouldn't have the time.

I didn't pass my interview with the Principal of the residential college ............ so I went to Liverpool instead, which has two cathedrals!!

Had a colleague from Nigeria working with us for 6 weeks about 35 years ago. Took him to Durham and to the Cathedral. Went up the Tower and he was so enthralled we had a great struggle to get him down.

One to spare, Sylvia. :-D

Robert, I get up the tower free - look at Friends of DC site :-D

I was up the tower last August. Can just about see our home from there, although it's lost among the many. The way to it is visible though. :-D

Each time we have visitors I take them up the tower - though I don't know how long that will last.

I visited there in 2009 on a ringing trip. I rang bell No.5 (9 hundredweight).

I have put a photo on keepsafe of the view of the Cathedral floor taken from the ringing chamber. http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/27659748

Having been up the heights on a couple of occasions, I can testify that the view is as spectacular as Kense's photo depicts it.
