Been a bit concerned because Harold the 50plus year old tortoise wasn't showing any sign of being awake . He is usually up and out of his house on the patio by now

Went out earlier to get the car out and heard some movements coming from his converted rabbit hutch which is his home .opened both doors and he emerged from the mound of hay he hibernates in

He has had a walkabout and is now kipping behind a big pot in the corner of the patio.

This time of the year have to keep an eye on him and make sure he is back in his house at night because of the frost

But he has made it through another winter which is great

We have had him since 1968 and he was about 4 plus years old then

Michael named him Harold after Harold Wilson who was PM then . He said he was slow like HW :-)

We think though that Harold is possibly a Harriett lol

How interesting! I don't think that we have tortoises here in Canada. We have different types of turtles including snapping turtle which is a nasty piece of work but no tortoises as far as I know. Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong?

I don't hibernate our two
I just keep them extra warm over winter with heat lights
so they don't sleep
Though they don't eat much for a few months :-D :-D

I don't blame him being slow to wake up Shirley, the weather has been so chilly if I were a tortoise I wouldn't wake up either.

Glad he/she is ok though. :-) :-)

I know they live to a grand old age but wouldn't like to lose him just yet

Michael always called him".my mate "and would ask if he was ok and had he been fed

Each year is phew he is awake so survived another hibernation
