EU to launch kettle and toaster crackdown after Brexit vote

The EU is poised to ban high-powered appliances such as kettles, toasters, hair-dryers within months of Britain’s referendum vote, despite senior officials admitting the plan has brought them “ridicule”.

The European Commission plans to unveil long-delayed ‘ecodesign’ restrictions on small household appliances in the autumn. They are expected to ban the most energy-inefficient devices from sale in order to cut carbon emissions.

The plans have been ready for many months, but were shelved for fear of undermining the referendum campaign if they were perceived on an assault on the British staples of tea and toast.

The decision to push ahead with the plans soon after the British vote was revealed by Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, at the weekly College of Commissioners meeting on April 20.

One word is missing - INEFFICIENT!
It's inefficient toasters, kettles etc, that the EU wants to ban.

http://www.euractiv.com/section/climate-environment/news/eus-ban-on-inefficient-toasters-delayed-to-avoid-pro-brexit-press-attack/

All it means, is the next toaster, kettle etc will be more efficient and use less electricity.

Much like, for a while, car manufacturers were encouraged to make cars with fewer emissions, which they apparently did - apparently being the moot point, as it appears VW and a few others lied.

It doesn't "take the biscuit" at all far from it.

(1) forcing manufacturers to reduce the electricity needed for the task will save people money
(2) the less energy used overall the less old style energy pollution will happen.

Well designed kettles, vacuum cleaners, wifi routers, toasters are already energy efficient notably Dyson. These proposed regulations if implemented will be phased in over time. The main loser will be manufacturer's of cheap Chinese products. Is that a problem ?

Maybe the Daily Mail and its readers dislike penguins and polar bears.

If you want to vote brexit by all means do so just don't post canards such as this which only serve to display your ignorance.

have a nice day

"They are expected to ban the most energy-inefficient devices from sale in order to cut carbon emissions. "

Is there something wrong with making an effort to cut carbon emissions?

Would you rather have a quicker cuppa before choking on the smog or not.... :?

No lets deal with China instead....they don't give a stuff about pollution. Lets all move next to the nuclear power station China will be building here...no? you think it too risky? ;-)

thanks Rollo I just thought it interesting that it has been delayed because of the referendum and whether it would be seen as an assault on our breakfast habits

Thanks to the Daily Mail, Sun, Daily Express, UKIP, Boris Johnson, the Hopkins troll, Uncle Tom Cobleigh and all it has become impossible to hold any sort of rational debate or to report what the EU is up to. It is then of little surprise that perfectly sensible measures are put on hold until after the Referendum. Some big UK issues decided in London are on hold too - Heathrow Airport, release of the Chilcott report.

The kettles issue actually teaches us quite a lot. One of them is that right wing journos employed by people who stand to make shed loads of money through financial trading based on brexit will distort just about anything in order to get a result. It is quite illuminating that Whittingdale MP - who wishes to emasculate the BBC - is heavily involved with these people. Nigeria may be corrupt but some problems begin at home.

The other issue is that creating standards for commercial products from kettles to car parts is completely beyond the power and competence of any middle grade country. Safe and efficient standards depend on an organisation that can stand up to the likes of VW at home and China away. Norway, Switzerland depend completely on the CE mark.

Should the UK vote brexit then it would not find it a practical proposition to bring back the kite mark. Neither would it have any say whatsoever in setting CE standards.

It is a feature of internet posts / twitter that people post on reflex what they read without any attempt to dig in what lays behind the item. It would seem then that it is not only seven year old kids who are woefully educated.

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.

The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.

Inside the flat a fruity voice was reading out a list of figures which had something to do with the production of pig-iron. The voice came from an oblong metal plaque like a dulled mirror which formed part of the surface of the right-hand wall. Winston turned a switch and the voice sank somewhat, though the words were still distinguishable. The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely. He moved over to the window: a smallish, frail figure, the meagreness of his body merely emphasized by the blue overalls which were the uniform of the party. His hair was very fair, his face naturally sanguine, his skin roughened by coarse soap and blunt razor blades and the cold of the winter that had just ended. "

With regard to kettles, it can be argued that a high power one is actually more efficient than a low powered one.
A high power one will come to the boil quickly with minimum heat loss during the heating period.
A lower power one will lose more heat whilst coming to the boil.
Taken to the extreme, a 3Kw kettle will come to the boil in a couple of minutes or less, a 100watt kettle would probably never get to boiling point, thus negating the lower power consumption.
The factors that would actually improve efficiency are: firstly the insulation property of the kettle material, and in this respect a plastic kettle has better insulation properties than metal; and secondly only boiling the amount of water that you actually need.
