Leadership

In less than a week after DC's resignation we have a new PM in Teresa May. Three of her leadership opponents are in her cabinet.

However, on the opposite side of the hose, just months after voting JC as leader by a land slide, there's a vote of no confidence. A few days ago Angela looked likely to succeed him. Not the case, she has stepped down. And, tens of thousands have joined the Labour party as paying members expressing confidence in JC. If things can move so quickly, why are they waiting until September to have their leadership election ?
If the land slide is as big as they suggest they could force an election and be in office by Christmas.

would you want to be in office with this mess to clean up?

Labour have absolutely zero chance of being elected to govern.

The only fairly certain prediction is JC will remain as leader with an overwhelming majority of party members supporting him.

Now IF you are a labour supporter you are going to be stuck in no man's land for many years as they couldn't arrange the set of numbers 1 to 10 in the correct order let alone come up with any effective opposition.

I couldn't believe yesterday when this man who has voted against his party over five hundred times when he was on the back benches, had the nerve to bang his hand on the table and demand that when he is re elected that all the labour MP's must support him. What a hypocrite

On her first outing during Prime Minister's Question TM showed no nerves, no fear of her peers.

Perhaps some might think, she's a woman, she's new, she's easy. I doubt it.
In her first hours in her new role she dismissed the Chancellor and Mr Gove
Boris, formerly an opponent is in her cabinet, as is Leadsom and Fox.

It's only 2 years since the Tories obtained a majority government, formerly an alliance with Clegg, who almost chose an alliance with Gordon Brown.

What the Labour party has on its side who ever leads it is numbers.

It would be interesting if they won an election on a hint of a promise to reopen the coal mines. We have enough coal for century's

Re-opening coal mines wouldn't be allowed under the EU climate change regulations.
And given the effect on the health of miners via chest diseases and accidents would we want to anyway?

I would support tidal power stations, surrounded as we are by tidal waters.

I know people claim they're very expensive to build but once built there is no search for dumps for the nuclear waste, no poison legacy for our children, grandchildren etc and I think we could supply our own builders too.

My thread about leadership was non-political and was reported while this one thrives.

Must give you some inkling into the mental workings of the RR merchant, if they have any.

I just noticed on TV that Hammond is in China strengthening trade ties!!! Strengthening them?!! I rarely find anything that's not made in China :-S

I would support nuclear power to cover the base load i.e. the lowest demand (say 3am on a summer's night) with renewables (wind, solar and tidal) making up the rest.
But as renewables output does not coincide with demand that means investing heavily in storage schemes such as pumped hydro (pump water up hill when demand is low and release it through turbines when demand is higher). This can be on the coast, although the number of suitable sites is limited, or inland as with the current facility in Wales.
It could be a nice little earner for Scotland which has suitable terrain and would make up for the loss of revenue since the collapse in oil price and declining output, especially if they finally break away from the UK.
