I usually ignore BBF dates and go by smell or sight, especially where food is concerned

Many over counter products have a lasting date,,,,it means they are less or none effect after that date/year as with all combinded potions break down even natural ones.......even unopened sterile products and that includes plasters which some have an expiary date.!

Strepsils only have short shelf life.

Well worth mentioning Bob, especially for medication. A lot of over the counter medications have a date on the packaging.

I'd taken to putting a sticky label on seasonal creams, saying which year it was purchased. There's one from 2010 with a 24 month shelf life once opened. That'll have to get binned!

Quite often , potions, and the like have a "use by" date (once opened)or dispose of, after this date
Eg...
My oh 's eye drops have a life of 30 days, once opened

What sparked the conversation was a discussion about the British weather. A tube of suntan cream might be used for 5 days in one year, then gather dust in the cupboard for the next 12 months.

At least we now know that we can safely use it for during the next British 'summer' :-D

That's useful to know DetEcTive.

I do know that hair dyes have a date of manufacture on them then it tells you how long you have to use them.

We’re all used to Best Before and Use by dates, but this is a new one (to me)

Potions and lotions such as you might buy at a chemist have their own system.

Have a look on the back of, say, a sun tan cream container. Amongst all the who it’s made by or ingredients blurb, you might spot a symbol representing a round open pill box. It might remind you of a flip-top bin.

Next or underneath that will be eg 18 mth.

That means that once you’ve opened the tube or bottle, you have 18 months before it should be replaced.
