Finding Dad

I am having real problems finding my Dad. I believe he is now deceased, but am keen to know if I have any relatives out there. Its really hard when I don't have a birth year and quite a common name. Any advice would be really appreciated. I believe his father was in the police force and wondered if that would help in finding out about him. I am now in my 60's so have left it very late. :-(

Might be possible( working roughly from your age) that he and/or his father appear on the 1939 register and as that has exact birthdates might be able to work from that, you can search name with occupation so father might show up if he was still in the police? . Do you have a location for him? If you want to post a name or message me with it , I can take a look?

Hi, Thank you for taking the time out to reply. Unfortunately I don't know his occupation, only his father's. He married my Mum in 1952, but there is not enough information on the record to trace him any further. She was born in 1933, but I don't know if he was younger or older. She will not discuss anything about him without getting upset, so it was never an option to ask her more. Thank you again.

It sounds as if you don't have, or haven't seen, a copy of your parent's marriage certifcate.
That would give his declared age & occupation. Witnesses might be from 'his' side of the family.

If you don't want to ask your mum if she still has the original, you can order a copy from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ at a cost of £9.25.

You'll need to find the reference numbers - look on any FH site you subscribe to, or for free on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Order the marriage cert from Gro £9.25

This will give your fathers full name age and occupation, you can then look for the birth as there are several William H. born approx. 1925-1935. do you know whether he was born in Nottingham? If you have his fathers name someone will look on the 1939 register for you to find his home and wife name, you can then go on to find the marriage of your grandparents and birth of your father and any siblings.

If when you get cert. post back on here plenty to help.
