It is the parish lunch tomorrow and I have always said that I am happy to provide my own piece of cheese or whatever because I don't want to cause anybody problems or get special treatment. it is my choice to be a vegetarian. So, I have had all sorts of little pies made for me and a quails egg salad once.

Anyway, they are having cottage pie tomorrow and the ladies cooking it are all old, one is ninety. I made some bolognese last night and there is a bit left over so I offered to put it in a dish and bring it up to one of the ladies this morning, thinking it would be the easiest thing for her to put the potato on and cook it with the others.

Oh dear no! I have to make my own mash and cook it myself so they can have the additional job of microwaving it for me tomorrow. Maybe she would like me to do myself a few vegetables and a pudding as well!

Honestly, I had thought it all through because I have cooked the lunch myself and I knew what would have been easiest for them. I think I am going to stop trying not to be any bother!

Sharron, are you the only vegetarian in the village?

Sharron

The only one who goes to the village lunch. It is £3.50 a pop, you get a main course, a sweet, coffee and a chocolate mint. I really am happy to take a bit of cheese and just have the vegetables.

One woman insists on doing me a vege sausage casserole which is really not very good at all and she insists she doesn't mind taking the trouble when I tactfully suggest i am happy with my cheese. I just don't book to go when she is cooking now.

While I try to glide in quietly under the radar there is one old biddy who insists on having food with no this, no that, not cooked like that and i think this is why I get something special cooked sometimes.

Had I taken my mince to the woman, she could have put the potato on and slid it in the oven, in my little dishy (aah) next to the other and I could have had just the same as the grown ups. As it is, they are now going to have to do an extra job, microwaving it, because I can't take a hot dinner up there.

So, in effect you pay for the food you are providing. (or for the company maybe).

I do but it is my choice. Where would you get all that for the price? It pays the hire of the church hall and it is a good way for the village to gather.

AND most people there are considerably older and I don't get the chance to be the baby very often these days.

The pub we use when we go to the S-in-L's ran out of dry martini, (my wife's tipple of choice) so I walked up to the local corner shop and bought them a bottle. They then proceeded to flog it back to me at £3 a pop.

I was invited to a 'party' to celebrate a colleague's substantial financial windfall.

Lovely invitation card arrived in proper time order with a PS: 'Bring your own plate'.

I didn't bring a plate because I didn't attend. Strangely, I seemed to have an already arranged appointment on the same day. Lucky me!
