I heard of one door knocker who was allowed in to attempt to sell double glazing.
After 2 hours he had not closed "the deal". So he he ask the house holder if he might phone his boss and see if he could get the price. This was a hoax. He had a pretend call but was unable to get a lower price. Unknown to the house holder he hadn't put the hand set back on the cradle. Some time later when the house holder went to use the phone she corrected this, also dialled last number re-dial. Was horrified to discover she was connected to the weather forecast Los Angels

We get cold callers for windows replacement schemes. Also for boiler scrappage schemes and, the latest, for a roof replacement scheme.

I would like to quiz some of them, but they are all automated calls. :-( :-(

I do hope for your sake it's not Dunraven from Bridgend :-(

We've had quite a few telephone cold-calls (despite being on the TPS list) from double glaziers. They've been rabbiting on about a windows replacement scheme. Not sure if it's a Marketting ploy or some sort of environmental govt/EU initiative.

We won't use National big named firms. Our local established one is a heck of a lot cheaper!

The firm doing my door are from Wales!! :-S

A friend (ex building trade) had an interesting slant on the 'wrong' letter.
I get the letter, expect new windows (despite them all being double glazed PVCu)
do all the prep, get annoyed, complain to Council, firm hopes to get more work!!

The firm that went around to my friends house and insisted she HAD to get hers changed (various reasons, climate change, H&S, the law etc etc) as they were more than 10 years old, was EVEREST!

My housing association house has Anglian double glazing and some of my windows have two different designs of window catch on the same window. I have also never had a key for my windows although my next door neighbour has more than a dozen.

Another neighbour has a window that lets in a draught.

I would NOT recommend ANGLIAN DOUBLE GLAZING to anybody.

I also pointed out to them that, even if they gave the excuse 'generic letter' - they could at least have two generic letters, one for the full window changing scenario, one for 'other' jobs :-|

AnnCardiff's thread about annoying cold callers, I had one insisting that, as the double glazing on my house was over 10 years old, it HAD to be renewed.
I suggested they contact my landlord.....
My friend, who owns her own house, had someone knock on her door, and insist her double glazing had to be renewed too :-|

Well, on the subject of double glazing/PVCu/Upvc replacement, the council want to replace my wooden front door with a PVCu one. I reluctantly agreed. In May, someone came to measure the door.
Then, last week, I received a letter, and a form to sign (declaring that I would be in) , stating that on behalf of the Council, they were going to replace both my windows and doors (both doors, even though the back door is a PCVu one, and less than 5 years old), on September 14th.
The letter was a page long, informing me that I had to take down all curtains and nets (or in my case, blinds), move all ornaments, move all heavy furniture away from the windows, remove any cables that go through frames, etc, etc.

Well, being a bit of a sceptic, I phoned the Council. The firm are definitely replacing my front door on behalf of the Council. The rest is, as I thought, poppycock :-|

E-mail was swiftly sent to the firm.
Amongst many other comments, I questioned whether I should believe the date given for work to be done. In light of the covering letter, my conclusion was - no!
I also pointed out that, as the letter implied all my windows could be replaced in a day or so, a door should take no more than half a day - for which I'd also prefer a time. If that was unattainable, then I'd like either a morning or afternoon appointment.
Also, if I have to take a day off work, I'd prefer a Monday or Friday, thus giving me a long weekend.

I don't think that's too much to ask for, considering I could have taken 3 days off work unnecessarily - one day to remove blinds, the day of the alleged window replacement, then another day to replace the blinds - and all the shifting of furniture etc. - which would, of course, have been for no reason :-| :-|
