I have been doing patchwork for very many years with an extremely long break.

When I first did it I would plunder the stock of a rag merchant in Pompey and send off for end of loom bundles from mills. Places like Laura Ashley would sell off cuts and left overs quite cheaply.

Having taken it up again I find that there are companies who cut up new material into squares and sell it at market price. It is no longer a cheap hobby.

Now, it did occur to me that some of the shops who have cotton clothes that are too worn to sell in the shop could maybe cut out 5" squares from any good bits, and there will be some, to make more profit before they go to be made into paper.

all my clothes go to the local homeless centre here in Cardiff - they are very grateful, unlike the charity shops who I find are rather offhand - a case of "oh put it there"

we get far too many charity bags in this area, sometimes as many as three in one day

Saves me buying bin bags. All our charity stuff goes to the local shop. I too have gift aid and it is interesting when they tell you how much your donations have raised. In fact I have just used the last charity bag so I wish they'd put some more through the letter box. I do, very occasionally fill the heart foundation one and then watch for their van.

We use them to put our shredded paper in and then drop it off at a smallholding that asks for shredded paper as well as veg peelings.

Just filled a lot of BHF bags and were collected yesterday.I also use the gift aid.
They took boxes of books as well, most were very good, but I had some water damaged from a flood in garage and they took them as well.

yes we seem to get a glut all at the same time

i dont use them other than for bin bags as i am told they just sell the clothing on for the rag value

i would sooner take to the local charity shops ,as i have done for some of hubbies clothes , i have also signed a gift aid vat reclaim so that they can claw it back

i have received thank you for donating letters and we have made £|||||from the latest sales.

they will recycle for the rag value for items they wouldnt sell like pants ,socks etc and i am ok with that

would sooner hubbies clothes be of use to someone rather than being scrapped

Be careful Andy - don't drop any used tea bags in them - they tend to have airholes :-D

Anyone else having a problem with these.

Been out for the morning, come home and there are four of them stuffed through the letterbox. Thats in about three hours and makes more than ten this week so far. Isn't anyone coordinating? A great waste of effort. Oh well saves buying bin liners for a while.
